REDDING/RED BLUFF cont. are ready to slug it out with early season with kings! “I’ve been spending my time recently chasing wild rainbows on the Sacramento,” reported Mike Bogue of Mike Bogue’s Guide Service. “We’ve been getting great quality fish while back trolling a variety of plugs including Yakima Bait 3 inch Mag Lips. When the bite slows on plugs I’ve been drifting with glow bugs teamed with Pautzke Orange Deluxe eggs or small pieces of Pautzke cured roe.” “I’ll be available for salmon fishing once the season opens up on July 16. I’ve got all my rods spooled and my lures are ready to go. All we need now is some salmon. Every opener is different and there’s really no way to tell how the fishing is going to be until you hit the river and run the gear, but there seem to be plenty of fish in the ocean and this is where a lot of them will end up,” advised Bogue. “The trout fishing has been great on the river and I’m really looking forward to salmon season,” said Robert Weese of Northern California Guide Service. Weese isn’t sure where he’ll start the salmon. He might be down Corning way or he might be up in the lava country above Red Bluff. Robert will be out pulling plugs on the opener and he’ll quickly dial in on the action as it develops. RIO VISTA AREA Smallmouth Bass Hitting in Steamboat and Miner Sloughs FREEPORT – Striped bass in the Delta has slowed down, while anglers are picking up increasing numbers of smallmouth bass in Miner, Sutter and These folks took a Sunday fishing trip on Lake Tahoe in late June and scored a limit stick full of big beautiful mackinaw. Johnny Tran of New Romeo’s Bait and Tackle in Freeport said, “Smallmouth bass are taken along the rocky banks with live minnows or plastics on a drop-shot rig along with deep-diving crankbaits or 3-inch Kei Tech’s swimbaits. “Striped bass are still in the system, and there are a lot of shakers around. Sardines coated with garlic spray or pile worms are working for the linesides while catfish are found in the Sacramento Deep Water Channel with chicken livers, mackerel, or nightcrawlers. Bluegill are thick in all of the back sloughs, and the Delta Loop or Walnut Grove have been good locations to soak red worms or jumbo red worms.,” he said. Captain Joey Gamez of Golden State Sport Fishing continues to find good sturgeon action in Montezuma Slough, the Big Cut, and Little Cut for the few anglers who still are interested in fighting the diamondbacks. The striped bass continue to wind down as the linesides are heading for the cooler waters of San Francisco Bay, but the largemouth bass bite is getting ready to bust wide open with the warmer water temperatures. Dan Mathisen of Dan Mathisen Outdoors and Guide Service was out casting frogs on Father’s Day, and he said, “I have been throwing Sanford Bait’s Boom Boom frogs and have released a dozen largemouths this afternoon in the wind. I have been targeting shade pockets, tule breaks, and the small mats of grass. More grass will be forming once the wind stops.” - Dave Hurley ROLLINS/SCOTTS FLAT LAKES Bassers Enjoy Topwater Action Early & Late COLFAX - “I’ve been on a bass binge recently with two kayak trips to Rollins Lake, one bank fishing trip to Scotts Flat with my dad, Dennis, and a hike and fish trip on the North Fork of the American Fish Lake Tahoe! 3204 5 hours DaiLy Trips 90 $ All Gear Provided (800) 877–1462 Fishing•Camping•Boating Our LAKE IS FULL! I’ve caught bass on topwater lures during every trip,” exclaimed Jason Pleece of Meadow Vista. “At Rollins Lake, there has been some boat traffic which is common in the summer, but it has not hurt the fishing at all. On one trip, I hit the lake early and worked my way up the Bear River arm. I got 7 fish to 2 pounds on top working a Rebel Pop R. After that I got 6 more bass from 8 to 12 inches on a Berkley Power Grub worked on a 1/8-ounce darter head. On my second trip, I fished during the evening and got 11 fish to about 1.5 pounds on the popper,” said Pleece. “After doing so well at Rollins in the evening, Dad and I decided to try Scotts Flat in the evening. It wasn’t as good as Rollins but we still managed 5 bass between us. 3 of them were smallmouths and the rest were largemouths. The biggest fish was a 3.02 pound largemouth. My dad got that fish twitching a 3-inch floating Rapala in a perch pattern. I got a couple fish on a yellow and silver Yo-Zuri Banana Boat,” disclosed Pleece. “On my early morning hike on the American I got 5 fish. All of them were less than a pound. They all came on a tiny clear plastic Rebel popper. Once the sun hit the water the bite was over. If you visit the river use caution while hiking. I spotted 3 small rattlesnakes near the water,” tipped Pleece. SACRAMENTO AREA Anglers Gear Up for Salmon Opener SACRAMENTO – Fishing pressure is very light on the Sacramento River in the Sacramento area. However, that will all change when the river opens up to salmon fishing on July 16, 2019. Last year anglers fishing at the mouth of the American River experienced some of the top salmon action in the state on opening day while trolling spinners, Flatfish and Brad’s Cut Plugs. Hopefully, the fishing will be similar to what it was last season at Discovery Park. The daily bag limit will be two this year and the possession limit will be four fish total. Until the salmon opener, the few anglers getting out can expect to catch a mixture of striped bass and catfish in local waters. “Anglers are still hooking schoolie stripers while using bloodworms and pileworms,” said Dennis Pfanner at Sacramento Pro Tackle. “Expect the top action while fishing from shore and boat from Discovery Park to the I Street Bridge. Expect to hook a lot of shakers for every keeper landed.” “Catfishing this time of year is best in the Sutter Bypass off O’Banion and Franklin roads,” said Pfanner. “Throw out mackerel, sardines and chicken liver early and late in the day and at night. Fishing minnows and small jigs around the pump stations is also worth a try for crappie in the bypass.” - Dan Bacher SAN PABLO RESERVOIR 30 Lb. Channel Catfish Leads Catches EL SOBRANTE – A catfish again leads the angling parade at San Pablo Reservoir. Phat Pan of San Pablo caught a 30 lb. channel catfish while using shrimp at Gazebo #1, reported Marcella Shoemaker of the Rocky Mountain Recreation Company. “Trout fishing continues. Normally trout season comes to an end in the middle to the end of May but we are still seeing trout being caught,” said Shoemacker. “In some of the most bizarre fishing we have ever seen, the trout are biting on chicken livers, anchovies and top water baits. “ Dave Hanis of San Pablo caught a 5.4 lb. trout at the pines on Mice Tails. James Stoker of San Rafael caught and released one crappie and one 3 lb. largemouth bass. He also caught four CONTINUED ON PG 19
