Captain Dennis Baxter of the New Captain Pete out of Half Moon Bay Sport Fishing went up to Stinson Beach this past week for limits of salmon, but the local scene has been much slower for salmon as the fish are holding deep. The Riptide and The Queen of Hearts out of Half Moon Bay Sport Fishing are also alternating between rockfish/lingcod and salmon trips, and they have also been traveling north and east for salmon after a few ventures south to the Deep Reef. The fleet concentrated on rockfish fishing on Saturday, July 6. The Queen of Hearts returned with 340 rockfish up to 7 pounds and 2 lingcod up to 9 pounds, while the Riptide came back with 190 rockfish for 19 anglers, as well as releasing 20 rockfish. Captain Tom Mattusch on the Huli Cat went out with the Bay Area fleet between the Farallon Islands and N Buoy on Friday, July 5th, for limits to 16 pounds along with crew fish for a 10-person charter within 2.5 hours. MOSS LANDING – The salmon fishing in Monterey Bay heated up as a big school of fish arrived from the Morro Bay area. “Our group of 8 anglers out on July 4 landed limits of king salmon to 20 pounds,” reported Carol Jones of Kahuna Sportfishing. “The 16 anglers fishing aboard the Kahuna on the following day landed 16 king salmon to 22 pounds while enjoying beautiful weather in the bay. They also released 5 Chinook salmon.” On Saturday, July 6, the 20 anglers on the boat caught 10 salmon, releasing 15 Chinooks, while mooching anchovies in the bay. The rockfish action off the Monterey County Coast is excellent when the weather allows the boats to get out. The 21 anglers on the latest bottomfish adventure aboard the Kahuna landed 210 rockfish and 2 lingcod. The boats out of Chris’ Fishing Trips have been fishing for both salmon and rockfish. The 19 anglers aboard the Checkmate on July 6 bagged 15 lingcod and 143 rockfish, while the 23 anglers on the Checkmate the day before landed 14 king salmon.
