WEST DELTA
TAHOE
Mackinaw Bite, Kokes Should
Show Soon…
SOUTH LAKE TAHOE - Fishing is good
at Lake Tahoe if you are willing to go
deep for macks. The lakers are running
large and fish in the 6-pound class are
common. If want kokanee you’ll need to
wait a while longer as the salmon have yet
to show in a meaningful way.
The team at Tahoe Sportfishing has
been putting their customers on limits of
keeper size macks that top out at 5 to 6
pounds. Minnows teamed with flashers
have been the top tempter.
Once the kokanee bite solidifies Tahoe
Sportfishing’s skippers will begin targeting
them.
Royce Jones of Sacramento and his
wife Jenny spent the 4th of July holiday
up at Lake Tahoe and spent a lot of time
trolling for mackinaw.
“We got most of our fish in 60 to 100 feet
of water. We caught a couple dozen fish
all together. Some of them came on 3-inch
Gulp! Minnows trolled behind Mack’s
Flash Lite Flashers and the rest came
on Yakima Bait Frog Pattern 3-inch Mag
Lips. Our largest macks was just short of
7 pounds and the smallest was about 16
inches,” said Royce.
Catfish & Black Bass Hold Center
Stage, But Stripers & Sturgeon Are
Still Available
PITTSBURG - There is a lot of fishing on the
menu for anglers interested in visiting the West
Delta. Catfish are on a very good bite, black bass
are cooperating and you can still catch stripers if
you fish at the right time of the day.
For catfish, anglers are working water from
10 to 20 feet deep with clams, worms and
anchovies. While the best action takes place in
the evening or after dark, fish can be caught all
day long with the best bites occurring when the
tide slows.
Stripers can still be found throughout the lower
end of the Delta in isolated schools. Trolling or
plugging are the preferred methods of targeting
these fish and the tops and bottoms of the
tides are the best times. Most of the stripers
encountered will be schoolies, but fish up to 15
pounds have been landed.
Bait anglers are catching some quality stripers
on frozen shad, but there are so many
small bass in the system that it takes
patience and lots of bait to hook
the larger fish.
Smallmouth bass are hitting
crankbaits and surface poppers
in the channels above Rio Vista.
Look for these fish to be
holding on rip rap covered
banks.
These folks took a July 3 trip to Stampede Reservoir with Captain James Netzel and
limited out on handsome kokanee.
