VOL.37 • ISS. 23 Clear Lake Collins Lake CLEARLAKE – Don Paganelli of Paganelli’s Bass Fishing Experience reported a “fun but tough day” on a recent trip to Clear Lake. “The two of us caught and released about a dozen quality largemouths while working drop shot rigs,” he explained. “The low pressure moving out and high pressure moving in is not the best time to fish ,but we moved around and put together a nice pattern.” The fish averaged 2-1/2 pounds, with the largest going 3 pounds. “We used 3 different colors, but the key wasn’t the color. It was putting the bait in front of the bass,” he explained. “The fish were holding deep at 18 to 20 feet.” OREGON HOUSE – Fishing has been very light lately, but that will all change when weekly trout plants return to Collins Lake from Mid-October to Thanksgiving. Every plant will include larger trophy sized trout for shore anglers and boat fishermen to target. The surface water temperature at Collins Lake was 72 degrees at press time, but that will change with the arrival of cooler weather. The trout plants will go in when the water temperature goes down below 70 degrees. In addition to private trout plants from hatcheries, Collins Lake also raises trout in 12 net pens at Collins Lake from mid-November thru April. This is Drop Shot Rigs Produce Largemouths Anglers Gear Up for Fall Trout Plants been lowered for Phase 2 of the Contra Loma Boat Launch Facility Improvement. Anglers are unable to launch trailered boats. Other boats will need to be carried to the water and launched from the shore, reported Joe Sullivan of the East Bay Regional Park District. Trout fishing has been slow, but that is expected to change, since the water temperature has cooled and rainbow trout plants have begun at the reservoir. The park district planted 750 pounds in the lake the week of October 6. “Tiger Tails in pink or yellow would be the best lures to try,” advised Sullivan. “Try using PowerBait or nightcrawlers as well.” “Black bass have been biting with artificial baits/lures or nightcrawlers anywhere around the lake or from boats. Both boat anglers and shore- casters are having luck, so keep moving if you are not catching,” he tipped. “Try fishing for catfish at Channel Point or Loma Island with anchovies, nightcrawlers or chicken livers. Boaters have been doing well toward the middle of the reservoir or along the dam.,” Sullivan added. Reminder to boaters: All watercrafts (including float tubes) need to have a wearable Coast Guard approved personal floatation device (PFD) per person. Children age 12 and under must wear personal floatation device (PFD) while the vessel is underway. – Dan Bacher Lake Davis Trollers, Bank Anglers Battle Quality Rainbows Collins Lake trout action is under way. Anglers have reported catching a few channel catfish, black bass and rainbow trout. Steve Kenitzer of Tracy demonstrated his angling prowess by landing a 9 lb. catfish. He was fishing a nightcrawler off the dam in his boat, reported Kristina at the Collins Lake Resort. Daniel of Oregon House also bagged a 9 lb. rainbow while trolling PowerBait in the middle of the lake. The lake level is currently 27 feet from full. There are lots Capt. Brad Bugica of rainbow trout swimming around in Lake Davis. The CDFW made two plants of rainbow trout totaling 14,200 pounds at Lake Davis in early August, greatly adding to the number of trout found in the lake. “We fished all over the south end of the lake below the Narrows,” said Paganelli. “We caught three fish off Henderson Point and the rest south of there.” They didn’t hook any catfish on the drop shot rigs. However, they did see one angler bait fishing from a boat bring in a catfish in the teens while they were targeting bass. Paganelli didn’t seen any anglers targeting crappie. The crappie fishing should start improving as the panfish congregate around bait and structure around the lake with the dropping water temperatures. Use jigs and small swimbaits for the slabsides. The water temperature was 65 to 68 degrees during Paganelli’s trip. – Dan Bacher 13 Oct 26 - Nov 9, 2018 Freshwater Full Time Guide “I’ll make you a better Hooker!” Now booking Sacramento River SALMON! 3615 888-975-0990 WWW.FISHTIGHTLINES.COM $50 OFF for Veterans!
