“The largemouths have been especially
voracious on the surface.; sub surface
jerkbaits can be a good bet as well.
You want to work the rock points in the
narrows or try fishing the reed patches in
the coves that are bottoming out.”
And of course, the bluegill are always
hitting on redworms. “Any structure is
good to fish for them because they like
to hide under tree branches or in weed
mats.,” he tipped.

EAGLE LAKE
Trout Bite & Conditions
Improve as Trophy Time
Approaches
SPALDING- Over the past two years the
trout fishing at Eagle Lake has improved
dramatically. While the fishing has been
good in the spring and summer, fall is
the time that really gets Eagle Lake
anglers excited because that’s the time
when the biggest fish of the year move
shallow and gobble goodies. The best
fall action typically takes place when the
surface temperature dips down to about
50 degrees. With the surface temperature
now in the middle 50’s and slowly
dropping we are almost there!
As of press time anglers were rounding
up limits of trout to 4 pounds on a variety
of offerings. Orange spoons were doing
damage for guys that like to troll fast,
while grubs and threaded worms were
taking rainbows for the slow trolling
crowd.
Currently there is some algae in the
water column in the south basin, but not
enough to interfere with trolling. Currently
the trout are holding and feeding in the
top 15 feet of the water column.
Boat launching is going fine at the
second ramp in Gallatin. Crowds have
been light this fall, with less than 20 boats
on the water most days.
If you’re planning a trip to Eagle Lake
and would like to take your RV, get in
contact with the team at the Eagle Lake
RV Park and ask them about the Fish
Sniffer Special! -(530) 825-3133.
If you’d like to take a guided fishing trip
at Eagle Lake, Capt. Cliff Spediacci of
Hook & Ladder Guide Service is a great
choice. For more information or to book a
date, give Cliff a call at (530) 250-5996.
For both late season gear and fly
fishing, Captain Bryan Roccucci will be
back on Eagle again this fall. As of press
time Roccucci had started his fall fly
trolling trips on Eagle with great success.

season.”
They are expected to keep spawning
fall Chinooks through the second week in
November.
The hatchery this year trapped 2,103
spring run Chinooks, compared to just 686
fish last year, the worse season on record.
The facility has also taken over 3 million
spring run eggs, much better than the only
600,000 eggs they took last year.
Salmon fishing on the Feather from
the unimproved boat ramp above the
Thermalito Afterbay Outfall to 200 yards
above the Live Oak boat ramp closed after
October 15, though fishing for steelhead
and other fish species will remain open.
“Right after the closure, we were
hooking 5 to 6 salmon per day while
fishing Brad’s Killer Fish in the Yuba City
area,” reported Rob Reimers of Rustic
Rob’s Guide Service. “However, the
fishing slowed down on my two most
recent trips. On the first trip I caught and
released two salmon and the next trip had
two take downs, but didn’t land any fish.”
The bag limit for fall-run Chinook Salmon
on the American, Feather and Sacramento

is two fish, according to the 2018-2019
Supplemental Sport Fishing Regulations.

FOLSOM LAKE

Big Bass Numbers
SACRAMENTO – The spotted,
smallmouth and largemouth bass are
gorging on big schools of pond smelt and
threadfin shad as bass action heats up at
Folsom Lake.
“Rick Tietz and his fishing buddy hooked
and released a ton of spotted, smallmouth
and largemouth bass while jigging with
Blade Runner spoons on a trip to Folsom
Lake,” said Alan Fong of Fisherman’s
Warehouse. “The majority of fish were
spots and smallmouths in the 1-1/2 to 4 lb.
range. The best depth was 25 to 35 feet
deep.”
“He showed me a photo of the bait
and fish and stacked up on the graph,”
said Fong. “He didn’t need to tell me any
more.”
The water temperature has dropped to
67 degrees at Folsom Lake Marina.
Folsom Lake is holding 425,627 acre
feet of water, 44 percent of capacity and
82 percent of average. The lake is 406.69
feet in elevation.
The ramps at Granite Bay, Folsom Point
and Hobie Cove are still in operation. The
top of old Salmon Falls bridge, located on
the south fork of the American River, is
just below the water’s surface. The bridge
is well marked, but use caution when
boating both forks of the river.
Trout and salmon reports at Folsom
have been very scarce lately. As water
temperatures cool, you can expect the
rainbow trout and king salmon bite to
perk up on Folsom. When the reservoir
undergoes its annual fall turn over, shore
fishing can be as good or even better than
fishing from a boat as the fish move into
the shallows to feed.
Bank anglers should toss out
nightcrawlers, PowerBait and live
minnows at Browns Ravine, Granite Bay
and Five Percent. Trollers should use
