KLAMATH RIVER
Upper Klamath Upstream of
Interstate 5 Reopens to Adult
Chinook Take
KLAMATH GLEN – The California
Department of Fish and Wildlife’s (CDFW)
Iron Gate Hatchery has determined that
the hatchery will have taken in more than
8,000 fall Chinook Salmon by the end of
this week. According to California 2018-19
supplemental sport fishing regulations,
the take of 8,000 fall Chinook Salmon at
the hatchery triggers the reopening of
the recreational Chinook Salmon fishery
between Interstate 5, near Hornbrook, and
3,500 feet below the hatchery.
Recreational anglers will be able to
harvest two Chinook Salmon, but no more
than one adult greater than 22 inches, per
day in this reach. The possession limit is
six Chinook Salmon with no more than
three adults.
Reopening this stretch of the Klamath
River is designed to allow anglers to
catch surplus hatchery Chinook Salmon
now that the number of adult needed
for spawning has
been achieved at the
hatchery.
The lower Trinity
River downstream of
Hawkins Bar is the
other section within
the Klamath basin that
remains open to the
take of adult Chinook
Salmon. All other quota
areas are closed to the
take of adult Chinook
Salmon.
The take of jack
Chinook Salmon,
equal to or less than
22 inches, may be
taken in all areas of
the Klamath basin, with
the exception of the
mouth of the Klamath
River, which is closed
for the remainder of
the year. The daily bag
limit for jack Chinook
Salmon in these areas
is two fish per day and
no more than six in
possession.

Lure Tossers Are Still
Hooking Stripers
COLUSA – King salmon
fishing is quite slow on the
Sacramento River in the Colusa
and Knights Landing areas. Most
locals are fishing the river above
Los Molinos for the top success
on salmon.
However, diehard anglers are
catching and releasing striped
bass while throwing S-Wavers
and other glide baits in the
Colusa region. “One local has
reported hooking and releasing
fish in the 18 to 20 lb. class, as
well as smaller fish,” stated Don

LOS VAQUEROS

Catfish, Trout and Stripers Are
Hitting
BYRON – Most anglers target one
species when they go fishing, but you can
catch three or more species when you go
to Los Vaqueros.
Just ask Gou Yang, who caught 15.6
lbs., of catfish, trout, and striped bass
while using Power Bait and anchovies in
Cox Cove and Howden Cove. The haul
included two stripers, two catfish and
two trout, reported Mike Allain of Los
Vaqueros Marina.
On the other hand, Yekam El Nakar
decided to target channel catfish while
night fishing at the reservoir. The result?
He landed 7 huge big catfish while
soaking bait in the South Cove.
Another angler, Don Ueto, focused
on trout by tossing out PowerBait and
Mousetails. For his efforts, he landed a

while using shad.
Big trout continue to come in, although
not in large numbers. Marvin Wells of
Sonora bagged a rainbow weighing 6
pounds, 15 ounces. Marvin landed his
trout while trolling Needlefish upriver at 40
ft. deep.
Kevin McCarthy of Laguna Niguel also
landed a large rainbow near the Highway
49 bridge at a 40 ft. depth while trolling a
gold/red Speedy Shiner, with no dodger or
flasher.
“Bass anglers report hooking up using
Bill Lewis Rat-L-Traps during some early
morning action, along with Johnny C. Jigs
and attached trailers.,” said Hildebrand.
“Plastic baits also provide solid bass
action on Melones.”
“The Castaic Bass Club made the
long trip to Melones. It was a pleasure
meeting this great group of guys. The
winning weight came in at 19.36 lbs.,” said
Hildebrand.
“Crappie fishing is slow, but not at a
standstill,” he tipped. “Anglers report
landing crappie in the marina cove and
trolling on the main lake at 40 feet. Fall
crappie can be found shallow, deep or at
the thermocline where it may be the most
comfortable area for them to forage for
food. “

limit of feisty rainbows.
The trout fishing is in full swing, with
anglers using PowerBait, nightcrawlers,
Kastmasters and other offerings in South
Cove, Howden Cove, the rockwall and
other popular spots on the lake. The
cooling water temperature – and a series
of big trout plants – are responsible for the
improved rainbow action.
Mount Lassen stocked the lake with
2,000 pounds of trout on October 19 and
another 2,000 pounds on the previous
Thursday. Twenty percent of the fish
planted are in the 10 to 15 pound range.
Although anglers haven’t reported
catching any of the trophy trout yet, they
are picking up fish in the 1 to 4 lb. range.
Stripers are also providing solid action,
but no big stripers have been landed over
the past couple of weeks. Most of the fish
are either shakers or keeper fish in the 18
to 20 inch range.
The water level is currently at 149,000
acre feet. With the cooler days and windy
weather the water temperature is floating
between 63 and 65 degrees depending on
the time of day.
If you are looking to rent a boat, contact
the Marina ahead of time to check current
wind conditions at (925) 371-2628.
