COVER STORY
This limit of beautiful rainbow trout were taken on an Original Rooster Tail Spinner. With all the rain and snow California has seen this winter, our lakes and reservoirs are likely to be murky and cold this spring. These conditions call for lures that put off a maximum amount of flash and vibration. Spinners are the perfect lure for this situation. Bright colors show up well in off color water, but don’ t overlook dark bodied spinners either. The vibration of the blade will pull the trout in and the dark body provides the trout with a solid silhouette against the clouded background.

Recreational Fishing Has $ 4.6 Billion Impact
ON CALIFORNIA ECONOMY
Hey Dan! ALEXANDRIA, Virginia— California’ s 2,795,253 anglers, who spent $ 2.4 billion while fishing in California, support more than 35,000 jobs and have a $ 4.6 billion impact on the state’ s economic output according to a new report from the American Sportfishing Association and Southwick Associates.
Recreational fishing brings a myriad of economic benefits to communities throughout the U. S. The American Sportfishing Association( ASA) and Southwick Associates have released the 2017 update of Economic Contributions of Recreational Fishing: U. S. Congressional Districts, along with a new series of one-page infographics, which depict recreational fishing’ s economic impact on all 435 Congressional districts and the 50 states.
The information in the report and infographics use data from the most recent U. S. Fish and Wildlife Services’ National Survey of Fishing, Hunting and Wildlife-Associated Recreation, conducted in conjunction with the U. S. Census Bureau, as presented in ASA’ s Sportfishing in America report. The study used mapping and population software to hone in on smaller geographic areas in a way that is particularly relevant to members of the U. S. House of Representatives.
The results in Economic Contributions of Recreational Fishing: U. S. Congressional Districts report describe the economic contributions for the respective state economies from anglers who live within each congressional district.
America’ s 46 million anglers generate more than $ 48 billion in retail sales with a $ 115 billion impact on the nation’ s economy creating employment for more than 800,000 people. Recreational fishing is the foundation of an industry that involves not just the manufacturing, sale or provision of tackle and other fishing gear, but also includes services such as boat builders, hotels, restaurants and much more.
Hey Dan! Nixon, NV— NDOT announced today, March 2, the completion of repairs to Highway 446 which sustained extensive damage in several areas due to the floods in January. Highway 446 is the highway that connects Sutcliffe and Nixon. Highway 446 is designated a national scenic by-way that traverses the south shore of beautiful Pyramid Lake, and gives recreational users access to many of their favorite beaches along the route.
Effective Saturday, March 4, the Tribe will open the beaches from Popcorn to Tamarack, and North Nets to Shot Dog. The area north of Tamaracks to South Nets, Warrior Point and all points north, and Dago Bay and Howard’ s Beach on the south end of the Lake remain closed to the public until further notice.
Tribal Chairman Vinton Hawley, states,“ We’ re excited to open yet another significant portion of Pyramid Lake to recreational users of Pyramid Lake. We acknowledge the efforts by NDOT to do highway repairs, and the work of our Tribe’ s departments to repair beach access roads. Their work ultimately insures safe travels and access for all of our community members and visitors,”
Previously, on Feb. 17 the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe opened the beach areas
“ A top priority for Members of Congress is the ability to identify jobs and economic opportunity in their districts,” said ASA Conservation Director Mike Leonard.“ By identifying recreational fishing’ s economic impact at the Congressional district level, we can clearly show Members of Congress that recreational fishing in their district or state is a tremendous economic driver and job creator.”
Leonard further said,“ Given the new Administration’ s and Congress’ focus on job creation, it’ s critically important that we provide accurate, detailed information to decision-makers on the tremendous value that recreational fishing provides to the nation.”
The report and Congressional district infographics are available atASAfishing. org under Facts & Figures.

Mary Jane!
That is an excellent report that documents the many economic contributions of sportfishing in California and throughout the nation. Too often in battles over water in California, corporate agribusiness interests and the politicians that they control claim that the battle over water to restore salmon, steelhead and other fish species is a battle between“ jobs and fish.”
In reality, the recreational and commercial fishing industries are a key part of the California economy, along with agribusiness and other industries. Salmon and other fish offer a healthy, sustainable food source, as well as lots of fun for anglers, land create many thousands of jobs.
I urge every angler and politician to read your report so they can see the enormous economic driver that the sportfishing industry represents.

PYRAMID LAKE PAIUTE TRIBE OPENS PUBLIC ACCESS TO PYRAMID LAKE ON HIGHWAY 446
between North Nets and Shot Dog for public recreational use after over a month of total closure of the Lake due to significant and hazardous road damages.
Chairman Hawley reminds the public that caution should be taken when using beach access roads due to washouts and on-going runoff. The floods and fluctuating water levels and erosion have resulted in new drop-off areas, unstable sand walls, and debris in the beach areas.
Chairman Hawley urges the public to respect the areas still subject to road closure. Closed roads will be clearly marked. Some areas are sprayed green for revegetation and should not be disturbed. The depth at the end of the boat docks at Pelican Point is estimated at 3 feet, so boaters will launch at their own risk. All public users of Pyramid Lake are asked to respect the Tribes regulations for the safety of all. Limited beach access is effective until further notice.
~ Chairman Vinton Hawley Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe
Hey Chairman Hawley!
That’ s great news! Anglers will be very pleased to know that another significant portion of Pyramid Lake, one of the world’ s best trophy trout fisheries, is again open to fishing and other recreational use.
