LAKE BERRYESSA
The Spring Bass Bite Is On
NAPA— Largemouth bass are in pre-spawn and spawning mode at Lake Berryessa, while the smallmouth bass have finished spawning.
“ I fished a club tournament, a Great Basin Bassers event, with my partner Ken Pella,” said Jake Dyer at Sweeney’ s Sports.“ Our five fish limit of largemouths weighed 21 pounds, including two 5 pounders, two 4 pounders and one 3 pounder. We also landed a few smallmouths, all over 2-1 / 2 pounds.”
“ We targeted submerged trees and brush in 7 to 13 feet of water on the northeast side of the reservoir,” he noted.“ We hooked the fish while using Keitech swimbaits and other reaction baits, as well as while fishing drop shot rigs; it was an overcast day.”
“ On the sunny days, you can find a reaction bite until about 11:00 am,” he noted.“ Then it’ s time to switch over to Texasrigged plastic worms.”
Anglers are picking up some quality crappie while fishing minnows and worms under bobbers in the coves around the lake. Like the bass, the crappie

LAKE CAMANCHE
Largemouths On Patrol
BURSON— The wind has been blowing the past few days and the bass are moving to the shore from where they have been staging at Lake
Camanche. Water temperatures are now ranging from 62 to 68 degrees, according to John Loverin Of ProCast Guide Service
“ We caught and released 20 fish, mainly largemouths and few smallmouth bass, on my latest trip to Camanche,” said Loverin.“ I used a variety of lures, including drop shot rigs, Senkos and swimbaits, at 2 to 15 feet deep. The fish ranged in size from 2-1 / 2 to 6-1 / 2 pounds.”
He fished mostly on the main lake.“ Start with secondary points and then move to the backs of coves,” he tipped.“ Use natural colors like obxbood, greens, browns, and purples. Also, there is a still a s Keitech swimbait bite available.”
“ A lot of people are fishing right on shore looking for bedding bass,” he advised.“ If you know where the fish are, make long casts to them and then move closer to shore. If you do so, you should double your catch ratio.”
He also noted that anglers are continuing to nail crappie towards the dam on small swimbaits,” Crappie ranging from ½ lto 1-1 / 2 lbs. are holding in 25 to 30 feet of water,” he added.
Loverin also advised anglers

CHABOT / SHADOW CLIFFS LAKES
Trout Dominate Spring Angling
CASTRO VALLEY— Lake Chabot is currently 101 % of capacity and the trout fishing has been great, reported Stan Wong of the Lake Chabot Marina. The water temperatures remain in the fifties and water clarity is about 7 feet.
“ Overall trout fishing has been AMAZING,” said Wong.“ Both bait fishing as well as trolling has worked really well for anglers. Fishing on both shorelines has been producing both limits and whoppers.”
“ Anglers fishing from shore are using a variety of PowerBait. Anglers trolling are doing well using Rapala lures. J7 firetiger, and rainbow trout patterns are the most productive. Our last trout plant of 1,000 pounds went in right near the marina.”
“ Since the beginning of April, over 15 whoppers( trout over 5 pounds) have been reported. Other baits that also work to catch trout

are chartreuse and yellow PowerNait,” he stated.
“ Bass fishing has begun to pick up,” said Wong.“ This time of year bass tend to be on their beds spawning. Using plastic worms has been the most productive.”
( Pleasanton) Rainbow trout plants have increased recently and so has the number of anglers at Shadow Cliffs.“ The lake has been stocked with Mt Lassen rainbow trout every week, for the past five or six weeks. The trout bite is slow with the trout going down to 40 feet,” advised Joe Sullivan of the East Bay regional Park District
Kyle Unger of Castro Valley caught a 5 lb. trout fishing PowerBait to the right of the marina.
The bass fishing is also picking up. Gabriel Rezendez caught and released 7 bass while using Senkos from a float tube in the arroyo. Bob Sratford caught a 3 lb bass also while fishing Senkos in the arroyo.
A fisherman was boating on the north side of the main lake when he caught and released a 10 lb largemouth bass.
The water temperature is 52-58 degrees, depending on depth. Water visibility seems to vary between 10-15 feet.
CLEAR LAKE
Hot Crappie Bite Continues
LAKEPORT— Crappie fishing remains excellent at Clear Lake, but the bass fishing has slowed down lately.
“ The bass fishing has been terrible,” said Bob Higgins of Limit Out Bait and Tackle.“ In the recent Wild West Tounament, only four of the weights were over 20 pounds. Most of the guys, experienced pros, weighed in limits ranging from 10 to 14 pounds.”
“ The bite just shut off. The bass have love on their mind.

However, many of the anglers reported good fishing while pre-fishing for the event,” noted Higgins.
Anglers are catching lots of crappie and big bluegill around docks and structure. The bluegill are going up to 2 pounds.
Fishermen are hooking the crappie while using an array of small jigs and swimbaits. The bluegill are hitting jigs, as well as redworms and mealworms..
Good areas to fish for crappie( for a fee) include the Indian Beach Resort and the Clear Lake State Park. Other areas include the county park, Lucerne Harbor or Lakeport Docks; these spots have free access, according to Higgins
