controlled the boat, I put the baits into the water. Less than a minute had gone by when the middle rod got slammed. It went down so hard I thought we’ d snagged but when I got it out of the holder I felt head shaking … Fish On!
The fish was heavy and fast and I was sure I had a 20 or 30 pound bass. Jack cleared the lines and got the net ready as the fish swam back and forth behind the boat and held onto the bottom like a bulldog.
Gradually I wore the fish down and when it came up we were blown away to see that it was a sturgeon.“ Dang we snagged a sturgeon,” Jack exclaimed. The fish made a couple more runs before I was able to bring it within net range and that’ s when we got a second surprise … the sturgeon was hooked in the mouth! getting the fish unhooked, we noted that it measured right at 39 inches and probably weighed about 30 pounds.
Of course, we released the prehistoric battler unharmed. I would have liked it to have been a 30 pound bass, but it was still a great fight and it’ s always cool to run your hands over a handsome sturgeon.
Back on the troll we struggled to get hit for a while only landing one smallish shaker, but then the bite turned on for whatever reason. The sonar screen came alive with arches at Light 35 and I hooked a dandy 7 pound bass straight away followed by 5 or 6 pounder on the very next pass.
At that point, we figured we’ d cracked the case and it was Jack’ s turn to reel in a few fish. Unfortunately, the bass weren’ t on
board with the plan.

As quickly as the bite had turned on it turned off again. The fish abandoned the shoals and despite trolling for another 90 minutes we never got another touch.
Jack and I have both caught our share of stripers big and small over the years, so we were more confused than disappointed by the lack of strikes late in the day.
Never the less, we’ d had a lot of fun, some good laughs and we had a nice sack of fillets to take home.
