first-time crab fishermen are getting involved with the sport. Anchovies, squid, and sardines are used in the snares, which have been more effective than crab pots from both the pier and along the beaches.
Striped bass fishing has been fair as the numbers of linesides haven’ t made an appearance, but Chaney reported at least one quality striper to 31 pounds landed from the surf at night on the full moon with a Diawa SP Minnow.

MOSS LANDING – The northwest winds and a groundswell have prevented the boats from getting out on many days lately. When the weather cooperates with fishermen, the lingcod and rockfish is excellent.
On the last trip by the Kahuna before the weather kicked up, the 17 anglers landed 32 vermilion rockfish, 61 rockfish, 15 lingcod, 17 canary rockfish and 23 copper rockfish off Point Sur, reported Carol Jones of Kahuna Sportfishing. The anglers used a mixture of bars, jigs, swimbaits, shrimp flies and bait to entice the bottomfish.
The charter boats out of Chris’ Fishing Trips in Monterey cancelled their bottomfish trips on the Mother’ s Day weekend.
On May 12, the 27 anglers on the Star of Monterey caught ¾ limits of rockfish and 38 lingcod. On May 11, the 20 anglers aboard the Checkmate bagged limits of rockfish( 200) and limits of lingcod( 40), while the 19 anglers on the Caroline returned with ¾ limits of rockfish and limits of lingcod( 38).
Salmon fishing remains tough.“ There were a few boats who fished in the wind near the Soquel Hole and caught a few fish on May 14,” reported Todd Fraser of Bayside Marine in Santa Cruz.“ There was a report on the radio saying 4 fish were landed near the point of Monterey.”
“ The majority of the action was rockfish and lingcod on the local reefs. There are some halibut being caught near Pajaro and in front of the Santa Cruz Harbor,” he concluded.

SAN FRANCISCO- Interest in striped bass continues to increase as temperatures rise along the city shoreline.
A few halibut and striped bass were being caught along the Golden Gate Shoreline according to Stefane Scott at Gus’ Discount Bait and Tackle.
“ Ocean Beach is a good place this time of year but it seems like most of the fish are coming from Crissy Field,” she related.
“ Try using Rat-L-Traps, swimbaits or a hair raiser. The stripers and halibut are hitting them,” she added.
Perch fishing was a good bet for anglers along Ocean Beach..“ Try shrimp or pile worms or cast grubs walking along the beach,” she tipped.
