FRESHWATER REPORTS

ALMANOR
‘ Bows Move Offshore And Bang Hardware
CHESTER-“ The trout fishing at Almanor has been good for several weeks, but things really ramped up over the past week or so,” related Captain Bryan Roccucci of Big Daddy’ s Guide Service.
“ For most of the spring we’ d been working the shorelines for big browns with Rapalas. Now that the rainbow spawn is over, the rainbows have moved offshore and are feeding on both pond smelt and insects. We’ ve followed
them and are having great results covering the water column from the surface down to about 30 feet or so. Rapalas are still working, but so are spoons like Speedy Shiners,” exclaimed Rocccucci.
“ We are still seeing some browns, but the average fish being caught is a 3 to 4 pound rainbow. Some of the rainbows are bigger and some are smaller, but if you hit the lake right now you can count on catching multiple rainbows right around the 3 pound mark. They are feeding heavily and put up a great fight when you hook them,” said Roccucci.
“ From what I hear, Buck’ s Lake

is about to open. I won’ t be up there for a week or more since the fishing is so good at Almanor. The lake was covered with a good amount of ice this winter. When we have those conditions the spring fishing can be really good for big mackinaw. I can’ t wait to get up there and try to put some double digit fish into the boat,” concluded Roccucci.

on Lake Amador.“ We’ re hearing reports of them being caught anywhere from 10 ft up to 25 ft. deep and everywhere in between,” reported Elizabeth Lockhart at the Lake Amador Resort.
“ We stocked another 1200 lbs this past Friday,” she said.“ PowerBait, night crawlers, and Kastmasters are doing well either from shore or while fishing the shoreline by boat. If trolling, Broken Back Rapalas are still doing the trick.”
“ The catfish bite is finally on, with many being caught, even by accident by anglers while trout fishing!” Lockhart exclaimed.“ Lots of cats in the 15 to 20 lb. range have been brought in the over the past week.”
Big fish honors go to Cody and Ray Lagorio from Linden, who caught a 20.30 lb catfish in Cat Cove on a gold Rapala. Luis also caught a 16 lb + catfish and released it back into the lake.
“ Bass have pretty much finished spawning, but are still on the shoreline and offer great fishing,” she advised. The swim pond is

AMERICAN BASIN / JENKINSON LAKE
Road To French Meadows Is Open
AUBURN- The good news is that anglers can get to French Meadows via the Mosquito Ridge Road. The bad news is that nobody has been reporting how the fishing is yet.
“ People are now getting into French Meadows, but they’ re pretty tight-lipped about the fishing,” said Craig Newton, the new owner of Willfish Tackle.“ The road to Hell Hole Reservoir is still closed.”
Shore anglers interested in hooking beautiful browns and holdover rainbows at French Meadows should toss out nightcrawlers and PowerBait and throw small Rapalas and Rebels near the dam and creek inlets.
