Break Out The Marshmallows
And Catch More Trout!
by Cal Kellogg
I grew up chasing trout both in the high Sierras and in highly pressure urban lakes.
The baits in vogue for bank fishing back then were night crawlers, salmon eggs and Velveeta Cheese. Those were the choices. We only used eggs in red. Those were the same eggs we used on Sierra streams. If they worked on mountain trout they had to be just the ticket for the truck trout in urban lakes and ponds. After all rainbows are rainbows, right?
Getting baits to float up off the bottom was a fundamental problem. Worms were simple since you could shoot them full of air, but that approach didn’ t fly for eggs or cheese. Once in a while an egg laying on the bottom might work, but for the best results you really need to get your bait to float up 12 to 24 inches …
What was the old timer’ s secret for accomplishing this feat of floatation? Marshmallows!
Back then you rarely if ever saw jars of“ fishing” marshmallows in bait shops. We solved that problem by seeking out our marshmallow supply at the supermarket. Those white standard issue‘ mallows rounded out our arsenals and provided buoyancy for our eggs and cheese. Heck we even figured out that you could use them to float chunks of worm. Why inflate a worm when you’ re carrying a halfpound bag of mini-marshmallows around?
These days the Atlas-Mike’ s offers an extensive line of marshmallows and not those albino hot chocolate condiments we used back in the‘ 80’ s. Atlas marshmallows come in a variety of different colors, with or without
added glitter and they are scented. Here’ s how I use them …
Modern scented glitter‘ mallows can be used in a variety of different ways. For example, I might add a Pink Shrimp flavored mallow or two with a red Mike’ s shrimp flavored salmon egg. Can you say shrimp cocktail? I can but the trout can’ t. It’ s dang hard to say anything with an Eagle Claw in your lip!
Since an egg and mallow combo has the super sexy name of Shasta Fly, you’ re probably wondering what a mallow and worm combo is called? Alas the letdown.
It’ s just called a worm and marshmallow, but dang if it’ s not deadly.
Add a chartreuse or orange mallow or two to that worm and you’ re adding both scent and color. How can you miss?
I advise still shooting a bit of air in the worm. If some floatation is good, more is always better.
