Trout Fishing Is Hit And Miss

PORTOLA – Trout fishing is “ hit and miss ” at Lake Davis , revealed Jeannie Graham of the J & J Grizzly Country Store & Campground .

“ The fishing was slow today , but it was good over the previous three days ,” she noted . “ Trollers are doing the best now . They ’ re fishing Dick Nites in copper red head at 7 to 25 feet deep off the east side and Big Island .”

The fish are beautiful rainbows in the 18 to 24 inch range . Fly fishing and bank fishing are slow .

“ There are not hatches taking place on the west side and very few damsel flies hatching on the east side of the lake ,” she explained .

Bank anglers are doing “ OK ,” not great , while tossing out PowerBait , Power Eggs and nightcrawlers in the Mallard Cove area .

Lake Davis is holding 83,000 acre-feet of water , 105 percent of capacity and 129 percent of average . The docks are in at the Lightning Tree and Honker Cove ramps .

Trout fishing at Frenchman Lake has been “ doing great ,” reported Shirley Wiggin at Wiggin ’ s Trading Post in Chilcoot .

“ We have been getting great feedback from anglers bank fishing , fly fishing , and trolling with fish averaging 16-20 ” in length and some catching 2-3 pounders . Nightcrawlers appear to be the # 1 choice of bait ,” Wiggin noted . Bob and Pamela Lee Parry caught 8 rainbows averaging 16 to 18 inches while using rainbow-glitter PowerBait at Lunker Point .

Dan Maxey and Larry Weis from Reno , NV caught a total of 7 beautiful rainbows fishing the creek above the lake . One fish was 3.5 lbs- 22 inches , another was 3 lbs- 20 inches , and the other 5 were 16-18 ” in length .

Frenchman Lake is holding 56,189 acre-feet of water , 101 percent of capacity and 132 percent of average .

Trout , Stripers Bust Loose

LIVERMORE - If you want to hook fish at Lake Del Valle , your top angling options are rainbow trout and striped bass now .

“ The weather this week here at Lake Del Valle has been gorgeous with average temperatures in the mid to high eighties and peak temperatures up to about 94 degrees ,” reported Coddy McGarry at the Rocky Mountain Recreation Company . ” The hot bite this week has been trout and stripers .”

“ Trout have been on fire this week especially with our latest 1000 lb . trout plant ,” said McGarry . “ Many anglers have been coming back with limits from shore and boat . Most anglers have been catching them on either PowerBait nightcrawlers or Mice Tails . I would also recommend using small jerk baits like Rapalas or Lucky Crafts . Most anglers have been getting them in either coves or in the narrows . “

“ Stripers are on a good bite this week as well , with anglers catching them either in the narrows or at the dam in open water . Most anglers have been using anchovies , nightcrawlers , and sardines . You might get a striper to eat either a chatterbait or hair raiser as well ,” he tipped

Bill Dan topped the catches with a 17 lb . striper taken in the Narrows . Ed Lan and Louise Chu-Yang of Fremont landed 6 trout and 4 stripers at the dam weighing a total of 28.22 pounds . Big trout honors go to Archie Labine of Livermore , who caught one trout weighing 7 pounds at the dam .

Catfish action has been really slow , but that didn ’ t stop George Rouhani of San Jose from catching a catfish weighing 10 lbs in the narrows .

Big Fish Action Heats Up

OAKDALE - The good news for trout and kokanee anglers fishing Lake Don Pedro these days is the size of the fish . Trophy-size rainbows and kokanee are on the bite . The downside is that the fishing hasn ’ t really solidified yet and rounding up a limit is difficult .

“ I can ’ t believe the size of the fish we ’ ve been getting ,” related Captain Monte Smith of Gold Country Sportfishing . “ We ’ ve had kokanee to 2 pounds and rainbows to 4.5 pounds over the past couple weeks . The fish are very spread out with all the water , so we are not getting that intense action most days . Instead we are hooking a fish here and there , but lots of them are really large .”

jumbo kokanee a few days ago that weighed right at 2 pounds even ,” said Smith .

“ My dad and I went on a scouting mission the other day to find kokanee . We caught a few nice ‘ kokes all of which were over a pound and we also caught several rainbows on our kokanee gear . Dad finished out the day with a beautiful 4.5 pound rainbow that we quickly released . The big rainbow was down 63 feet when it hit ,” he said .

“ The kokanee have been shallower , typically from 30 to 40 feet deep . I think we are in for a good summer at Don Pedro with an extended spring season due to all the cold water coming into the lake ,” added Smith .
