“ We are still seeing fish brought in during the early morning and the late afternoon hours ,” said Marcella Shoemaker of the Rocky Mountain Recreation Company . “ Soaking brightly colored PowerBait is your best bet .”

The lake level is now 309.4 feet in elevation and the surface water temperature is now 68 degrees .

“ We planted 600 lbs . of Rainbow Trout and 600 lbs . of Lighting Trout from Mt . Lassen at the boat launch last week ,” she said .

Big fish honors go to Seth McIntosh of Sacramento , who caught a trout weighing 8 lbs . while using PowerBait at the tower , and Donald Woodard of Daly City , who bagged a trout weighing 4 lbs . while fishing green and white PowerBait at the Main Rec . Area .

Shad Offer Top Action In Metro Region

SACRAMENTO - If you want to hook American shad , head to the Sacramento River at Miller Park and Freeport , where anglers are nailing the fish on shad darts in an array of colors .

“ The fishermen are using ¾ to 2 oz . weights to get the lures down in the high flows ,” said Michael Hill at Broadway Bait Rod & Gun . While most of the fish are the smaller males , anglers should expect to see more females as the run proceeds .

“ There are still a lot of stripers being caught on the Sacramento River at Miller Park , Bryte Beach and Freeport also ,” said Hill . “ Most of the fish are undersized or small keepers in the 18 to 20 inch class .”

Some larger stripers are showing around the I Street Bridge , according to Uncle Larry Barnes of Sacramento Pro Tackle .

“ One shore angler reported catching and releasing two fish around 35 pounds , along with a 28 pounder , on the west bank of the I Street Bridge ,” said Barnes . “ He captured one of the fish being caught and released on video . His trick is to fish specific tides and then to throw out five or six pileworms on one hook to target the larger fish .”’

Bass , Crappie Lead South Bay Area Angling Parade

COYOTE - Bass and crappie continued to reign supreme for South Bay anglers providing excellent action .

Finesse and reaction baits were the top methods for targeting bass this week according to the pro staff at Coyote Bait and Tackle this week .

“ At Calero and Anderson , you can catch fish up top during the mornings on either spooks or a glide bait , but during the day you can switch up to a drop shot or jig and keep catching , “ Alex Yu said .

“ At Coyote and Chesbro , guys are going out tossing jigs and plastic worms and doing good on larger fish ,” he added .

“ Crappie fishing is best either at Chesbro or Calero . The boat launch cove at Calero is fishing really good , and the coves at Chesbro are doing really good . Fish minnows or crappie jigs under a bobber set around 3-4 feet ,” he tipped .

Catfish continued to be slow , but Yu noted an increase in activity would occur as temperatures rise .

Bass Best At Shasta , Salmon Hit At Whiskeytown

REDDING - “ The trout fishing is just starting to get going at Lake Shasta ,” related Captain Kirk Portocarrero of SacRiverGuide . Com . “ We ’ ve been catching rainbows 12 to 20 inch rainbows while downrigger trolling the main body from 30 to 60 feet deep while pulling basic shad pattern lures . The occasional large brown to about 4 pounds has been showing up too . Overall the trout remain pretty scattered and the trolling is still somewhat inconsistent as a result .”

Historically , the trout bite at Shasta starts to heat up during the month of June . Once the shad start to school , the rainbows will start to concentrate and the fishing becomes much more consistent for trollers .

At Whiskeytown , kokanee to 16 inches are hitting , but it ’ s not a slam dunk type bite at this

time . A lot of limits are being landed , but to get a limit you ’ ll have to

Umpqua And Rogue Produce Springers !

ROSEBERG - The ODFW reports that the mainstem Umpqua is closed to wild steelhead harvest but remains open year-round for adipose fin-clipped steelhead . Spring Chinook season is in full swing with regular reports of anglers catching fish throughout the main . Summer steelhead should begin migrating through the main in May .

On the Main , anglers can harvest 2 wild spring Chinook per day and up to 5 wild springers from Feb . 1 – June 30 . From July 1 – Dec . 31 , anglers can harvest 2 wild Chinook per day , and in combination with the other salmon / steelhead recorded on your salmon tag , up to 20 fish total . Fin-clipped hatchery fish can be recorded on a separate hatchery harvest tag that is available . There is no limit on the number of hatchery tags that can be purchased . Daily limits still apply .

Springers are pushing through the lower Rogue . Boat anglers are picking up springers consistently , but the majority of fish have been wild . Most angling pressure has been in the lower river and the top of estuary .

On the middle Rogue , fishing for winter steelhead is winding down now that many of the fish have spawned and are headed downstream . The harvest of wild steelhead ended on April 30 . A few spring Chinook salmon have been landed , but fishing for Chinook remains slow . Chinook have been
