AMERICAN RIVER cont . the typical pink and chartreuse tail grubs . I was there one evening and saw that the anglers using the longer rods were able to get the lures out further and to handle the fish better in the heavy current .”
LAKE BERRYESSA
Black Bass On Great Bite
NAPA - Black bass fishing is going strong for boaters fishing in water twelve feet or less on Lake Berryessa .
“ Anglers are hooking mostly largemouth and spotted bass , along with a few smallmouths ,’” revealed Jose Rubio at Sweeney ’ s Sport . “ Drop shotting with Robo Worms and finesse fishing with Senkos on wacky and Texas rigs is doing best .”
While some fish are still on the spawning beds , most are on a post-spawn bite . “ Over the past week , anglers reported catching and releasing some fish in the 5 to 7 lb . range ,” said Rubio .
Catfish action is also excellent . “ I caught and released two channel catfish weighing 7 and 9 pounds while fishing from shore with chicken livers in the Putah Creek inlet ,” he said .
The crappie fishing is really good . Anglers are catching fish in the 1 to 2 lb . class , with some fish pushing 3 pounds , while using mini jigs in the coves .
The trout fishing has perked up with recent fish plants . “ Anglers are catching trout on jumbo worms and Power Bait under bobbers in the Markley Cove area ,” said Rubio .

BOCA RESERVOIR
Trollers Battle Kokanee Salmon

FRESHWATER

TRUCKEE – The kokanee season at Boca Reservoir has kicked off with a bang , with anglers landing good numbers of exceptionally large kokanee for this time of years .
“ We hooked over 50 kokanee on Saturday , but only managed to bring 20 to the boat ,” said James Netzel of Tight Lines Guide Service . “ The fish were huge for this early in the season , going up to 16.5 inches . I can ’ t blame losing fish on clients since I fought them and

Paulina Peak ’ s micro-hoochies behind dodgers also produced kokanee . Netzel scented his corn with either tuna or garlic .
BULLARDS BAR / ENGLEBRIGHT LAKES
Spotted Bass Bite Is Challenging
DOBBINS - Fishing at Bullards Bar , the home of world record spotted bass , is tough now , but should get better as the fish move into their summer haunts .
“ I had the pleasure of taking a husband / wife team from Florida to our beautiful Bullards Bar ,” said Larry Hemphill , fishing guide . “ After fishing 3 to 5 foot water in Florida , Bullards was probably a shock to them when my Lowrance would often read over 300 feet .” “ It ’ s a new world in California ! The fishing was fair since the lake continues to rise - now about 97 % full . All the cover ( trees and brush ) are now under water , so most fishing is on visible structure - points , walls , etc ,” he noted .
“ She fished for awhile and then most enjoyed the beautiful scenery . He fished hard and caught a bunch of spots up to 2 lbs but never hooked a big one ,” said Hemphill .
“ There are very few boats on the water . The dinks are showing up now but the bite is still slow ,” he noted .
“ I think the bite will gradually slide into the summer pattern - lots of dinks with an occasional large spot . The June post-spawn bite can be pretty good on crankbaits and swimbaits , but will probably be tougher because of the high water that will be with us for a while . Dropping Senkos around the flooded brush and trees should work pretty well this summer ,” he advised
Boaters are catching beautiful rainbows and a few German browns while trolling spoons , spinners and nightcrawlers behind dodgers at Englebright Reservoir . The lake is still spilling and water is a good aqua-marine color , reported Lisa Rogers at Skipper ’ s Cove Resort in Smartville .

CAMANCHE
Year ’ s Last Trout Plant Delivered
BURSON – The Mt . Lassen Fish Farm made their last trout plant of the year , 3,000 pounds of rainbows , at the Lake Camanche Recreation Area on May 25 , just prior to the Memorial Day weekend . They planted 1,000 pounds in the South Pond and 2,000 pounds at the North Shore boat ramp .
Trollers are experiencing the top action now . “ Your best bet is to troll with Speedy Shiners at 35 to 40 feet deep from Hat Island to the Dam ,” said Terry Willard at the Camanche Recreation Company . “ Robbie Dunham and two friends reported catching 15 trout , including a couple over 4 pounds , on his last trolling adventure .”
“ If you plan to shore fish for trout , you should go to the North Shore Day Use Area to the west of the boat ramp , since the water is deep there ,” she tipped . “ The water is shallower and warmer on the South Shore .”
She noted that the water temperature is 74 degrees at the North Shore Marina , 71 degrees in the narrows and only 62 degrees up the river arm , due to continued spilling from Pardee .
The bass fishing is excellent , with anglers catching and releasing big numbers of spotted and largemouth bass while throwing an array of offerings , including jerkbaits , top water lures and Senkos .
“ The brother in law and I left them biting ,” said Juan Padilla about his recent Camanche bass adventure . “ We lost count of the amount of fish caught today . My thumbs are torn up !”
Catfish action is also on the upswing with the warming weather . One angler brought in a 14 lb . channel cat , according to Willard .
Camanche has begun to slowly refill again . Elevation at the time of this report was at 217.53 ’ and 70 % full .
CARSON PASS
Rainbows , Browns Hitting At Lower Bear River Reservoir
PIONEER – Caples and Silver lakes were still iced-over at press time , but bank anglers and boaters are now hooking rainbows and browns at Lower Bear River Reservoir .
“ Anglers are catching a mixture of rainbows and browns ,” reported Jim Turner at the Bear River Resort . “ Your best bet is to fish worms , Power Bait or nightcrawlers .”
The biggest fish weighed in lately was a 6 lb . German brown caught on a lure .
The lake is full and the boat launching facilities are in full operation .
