caught again,” added Demmunik.
The reservoir is storing 153,293 acre-feet
of water, 96 percent of its 160,000 acre-foot
capacity. This is the most water ever stored at
Los Vaqueros. Pumping has stopped and the
reservoir will slowly drop.
The water clarity remains good. Water
temperature is down slightly, 64-64 degrees.
NEW HOGAN LAKE
The Striper Beat Goes On
VALLEY SPRINGS - If you want hook lots
of scrappy stripers, New Hogan Reservoir
continues to be a great prospect.
The three fishermen trolling with Monte
Smith of Gold Country Sportfishing on his
latest trip to New Hogan landed 13 stripers.
“The grade of the fish have come down a
bit,” Smith noted. “Most were smaller fish in
the 17 to 18 inch class, with the largest one
measuring 23 inches. All were males. I expect
the females to show up eventually after their
spring spawn.”
He trolled with both shad and anchovies, but
the anchovies worked the best. The fish hit at
16 to 30 feet deep in the lake’s main body.
“We fished until 2 p.m.,” said Smith. “The
water skiers and jet skiers didn’t start getting
on the lake until about noon.”
New Hogan is holding 245,679 acre feet of
water, 78 percent of capacity and 143 percent
of average.
The bag limit for stripers is 10 at New Hogan
with no size limit.

NEW MELONES LAKE
Kokanee Salmon Are Huge But
Not Plentiful
ANGELS CAMP - New Melones Lake
is close to full, the trout bite is on and the
kokanee are big if you can find them.
“The only thing that would make it better
is if the giant kokanee were more abundant,”
reported Gary Burns of Take it to the Limit
Guide Service. “On Tuesday, I finally put a
giant kokanee in the boat that weighed 2
pounds, 7 ounces and lost 2 more.”
“We put 38 rainbows in the boat this week
and only 1 kokanee, mostly using all kokanee
gear and in all the areas that I have fished
kokes in the past years,” he said.
“The rainbows are fat, big nice fish and the
fight is as good as you can get out of a bow,”
he said. “The total weight of the 10 bows on
Saturday that Jerry and I put in the boat, went
just over 22 pounds.”
