LAKE BERRYESSA cont .
fishing for largemouth bass and spotted bass on his latest trip to Berryessa .
“ I was privileged to take two well-known anglers to Berryessa on Friday - showing them some of the special features of the lake - as in “ secret ” structure ,” he disclosed . “ We learned mostly off-shore stuff and they made the best of it , catching many , many quality bass . No real toads , as they are hard to locate in the post spawn .”
“ The bite was very good in most areas where the largemouth and spots were active , but the smallmouth , not so much ,” Hemphill said . “ The clients came selfcontained and used a variety of baits - mostly plastics .”
The bite was consistent most of the day wherever they went . After a brief slow period , they found some huge schools of shad being hammered by quality bass .
“ This was one of the most active postspawn feeding periods I have ever seen !! They knew what they wanted and didn ’ t hit my clients offerings very well ,” he said .
“ I wasn ’ t fishing during that period but decided to test the Realis 90 Spybait that Jason Kincannon had showed me . I threw it a few times and got a good hit but missed it . A few minutes later it just stopped and got heavy . After a great fight , I landed that 5 lb largemouth .”
“ I can ’ t give you an idea of the baits we
used - lots of different ones . Most bass were on steeper banks except for the afternoon frenzy . But that activity had deep water close by . I ’ m guessing our limit was pushing 17 lbs with over 20 quality bass . The water color was almost perfect . Great weather - great clients - great day !”
The water temperature was 71-75 degrees .
LAKE CAMANCHE
Target Deep Water Near Dam For Trout
BURSON – Trout plants are completed for the season until late October , but there are still loads of Mt . Lassen Hatchery rainbows holding in the deepest water from the triangle between the dam , Little Hat , and Big Hat Islands .
The rainbows will continue to drop in the water column as the lake warms up .
Bass fishing remains solid with anglers arriving in the early mornings to avoid the heavy recreational boat traffic .
Crappie are still found near vertical structure with minijigs or small to medium minnows . All active , reserve , retired , and veteran military personnel receive a 20 % discount on Day Use entry and selected boat rentals . by Dave Hurley

PIONEER – Most of the fish reported caught at Lower Bear River Reservoir are planted rainbows , but some larger fish are also showing in the catches .
One angler reeled in a 6 lb . German brown while using worms , reported Mike Raso of the Bear River Lake Resort . One young angler also caught a 4 lb . rainbow while soaking Power Bait .
“ Fishing for rainbows is pretty good ,” said Raso . “ Shore fishermen are hooking fish while tossing out worms and chartreuse PowerBait near the marina and off the corners of the dam . Trollers are also picking up their limits while using nightcrawlers behind flashers .”
Caples Lake was still frozen over at press time , but should thaw out soon . Now word was available on the status of Silver Lake , but that lake thaws out generally one to two weeks before Caples does .
CLEAR LAKE
Bass Trip Yields Largemouths , Crappie And Bluegill
LAKEPORT - A recent bass fishing adventure at Clear Lake by Larry Hemphill , fishing guide , turned out to be a summer “ potluck trip ,” with largemouth bass , bluegill , crappie and even a catfish all gracing the catches .
“ I took 3 young men to Clear Lake Saturday ,” said Hemphill . “ They wanted a day on the water and hoped to catch some bass . They did - and some other species as well ! This is the ‘ new ” Clear Lake - you never know what you are going to catch .”
“ I had them using 6 ” Robo Worms of various colors that motivated various species to bite . They caught bluegill , several crappie , the token catfish about 7 lbs - and many bass ,” he noted .
“ They did better on quality bass in the afternoon . We fished the south end up to the narrows . Though one or two of them had not fished in a long time , their casting skills were quite good . So was their SNAGGING skill .” “ They did find a lot of rocks , but
hey , they were fishing along the bottom as they should . They did wind up with
several bass in the 1-1 / 2 to 2 -1 / 2 lb range ,” said Hemphill
“ We are in the summer pattern now - most of the south end water is green with a thin layer of algae while above Wheeler Point , the water is clean . Weeds are beginning to show in the shallows and tule lines are well defined . There are still some very shallow quality bass , as we saw a fellow catch a 5-1 / 2 pounder next to the tules ,” he tipped .
The water temperature was 70-74 degrees and the water clarity was stained , with 2 to 4 foot visibility .
