CLEAR LAKE
Wind Doesn’ t Stop Hot Bass Bite
LAKEPORT- In spite of heavy winds, Larry Hemphill, fishing guide, found great bass action on two days of fishing at Clear Lake.
“ I guided Thursday and Friday- day trips- with horrible wind both days, all day,” Hemphill explained.“ We could only find some protected areas to fish. I had 3 clients on Thursday and they all caught a lot of bass- biggest at 5 lbs. All the dinks that had been pestering us have disappeared for the time being.
“ They caught about 25 to 30 between them, many in the 3 to 4 lb range with a few bigger. Friday I had my 2 clients working the east side of the lower lake- trying to find some wind protected areas. I think the bass had the same idea since the bite was the best I have seen in recent memory,” he said.
“ The clients started off at 6 am catching quality bass up to 4-1 / 2 lbs and the bite never stopped by the time we quit at 2 pm. I lost count of the bass they caught- well over 50 with only 1 dink. The limits were well over 20 lbs both days,” he tipped.
“ Finally, these trips produced only one or two crappie,” he said.“ Nearly all the bass

caught both days were from 3 to 15 feet- a few down to 20 feet. Bass were everywhere- docks, retaining walls, points, and weed edges. The weeds are forming but not bad yet.”
“ The lake is green at Red Bud area, but fairly clear a little further north. We used 6 and 7 inch Robo worms most of the time with MM111 coming on strong! Morning Dawn is still good. Bass are beginning to look at beaver type baits also, along with the Yamamoto Flappin’ Hog,” he concluded.
The surface water temperature was 71-75 degrees and the water clarity was stained, with 2 to 4 foot visibility.
COLLINS LAKE
Trout Go Deep With Hot Weather
OREGON HOUSE-“ Summer fun is here,” reported Shelly Groce at the Collins Lake Resort.“ The fish are going down deeper and anglers are still catching a lot of fish.”
Trout are dominating the catches, but fishermen are also bagging channel catfish, black bass and sunfish.
Big fish honors go to Randy Wyatt of Petaluma, who landed a quality 6-3 / 4 lb trout while trolling, and Pat Durgan, who caught two rainbows weighing 6-3 / 4 and 6 pounds while fishing green PowerBait in Elmer’ s Cove.
Tim Franklin of Marysville landed a 6 lb rainbow while using a Berkley lure. Shaun and Alan caught 4 trout down by the dam on PowerBait. Mike Eltiste of Lincoln nailed a 4-3 / 4 lb trout on PowerBait down by the dam. Seino of Yuba City bagged 4 trout using green PowerBait by the dam.
Wyatt Joseph of Loma Rica caught a sunfish using mini jigs. Waylan McCutcheon of Loma Rica reeled in a limit of trout trolling on the lake. Kevin brought in a 4-1 / 2 lb trout from the north end of the lake.
Ray Johnson caught 5 catfish, one trout, one bass, and a sunfish while using worms down by the dam. Daniel landed a 4 lb catfish by the bridge. Bryan and Brooklyn caught a bluegill on live bait. Finally, Charlie Moore caught 5 bass on the dock fishing with a secret bait.
The lake is two feet from full.
COLUSA / KNIGHTS LANDING
Heat Keeps Most Anglers Off The Water
COLUSA- The record heat of the past couple of weeks has kept most anglers off the water, but the anglers fishing before it heated up were catching stripers on the Sacramento River.
“ Before the heat wave, boaters and bank anglers were catching stripers from
Princeton down to Meridian on top water lures and swimbaits early and late in the day,” reported Daniel Baca at Kittle’ s Outdoors.“ Anglers were also drifting live minnows and fishing cut anchovies and sardines for the stripers. The fish were a mixture of shakers and keepers in the 18 to 25 inch range.”
The shad fishing in the area near the Colusa Bridge has slowed down – and few anglers have been trying in the heat.
Baca reported“ phenomenal” largemouth bass fishing on a recent trip to East Park Reservoir.
“ Two of us caught and released 15 fish just in a half hour of fishing and we didn’ t start fishing until 11 am,” said Baca.“ We used spinnerbaits, creature baits and beaver-type baits off the points. Our fish ranged from 12 to 20 inches long during the trip.”

Fly Fishermen, Trollers Do Best On Trout
PORTOLA – Fly fishermen and trollers are experiencing fair action on rainbow trout, while bank anglers are struggling to catch trout.
“ During a recent derby, the fly fishermen did best,” said Jeanne Graham at J & J Grizzly Store and Camping Resort.“ Spencer Clark and his fishing partner caught 6 fish total measuring 22 to 25 inches.”
“ Fly fishing is best in the shallows of Cow Creek, where damsel fly patterns are yielding the best action,” she said.“ A lot of snails are also starting to show in the lake’ s north end.”
Trolling is also producing quality rainbows. Boaters are using the typical red dot frog Needlefish and Dick Nite copper red head lures at 20 feet or deeper, since the fish moved into deep water with the recent heat wave. The best area is from the Lighting Tree to Big Island and back.
