Big Trout Or Limits Of Kokanee?

CHESTER- Both Lake Almanor and Bucks Lake are offering outstanding fishing opportunities. At Lake Almanor trout that run 3 to 6 pounds are on the bite. At Bucks Lake the kokanee bite is wide-open and there are some huge bonus mackinaw in the mix too.

“ The bite at Almanor is steady these days,” reported Bryan Roccucci of Big Daddy’ s Guide Service.“ We are still slow trolling threaded worms along the bottom on the east side of the lake for rainbows and browns. Most of the fish we catch are rainbows that average 3 to 4 pounds. The browns tend to be the largest fish. Our big trout this week was a 6.5 pound brown.”

“ At Bucks the kokanee bite couldn’ t be any hotter for fish in the 12 to 12.5 inch range. The bite has been so good that I’ m having difficulty getting four rods into the water at the same time. When I start putting out the gear, one of the first two rods gets hit before I can even get rods 3 and 4

“ We’ ve been running Paulina Peak dodgers teamed with pink micro hoochies for the salmon. We got a big surprise this week when a huge mackinaw grabbed one of our kokanee rigs. The fish bolted off and came whisker close to spooling an Abu Garcia 5500 reel and I had to chase the fish with the electric trolling motor running full bore. In all it took about 20 minutes to land the mack on kokanee gear. It weighed in at 22 pounds. After a quick photo, we revived the fish and released it back into the lake,” said Roccucci.

17 Lb. Channel Cat Paces Catches

The annual Moonlighter Bass Tournament is scheduled for August 5 from 7 pm to 7 am. The sign in starts at 4 pm and the BBQ at 5 pm. The $ 175 per team includes entry fees. There will be an 80 percent payback in prize money for first through fifth place. The big fish option costs $ 10.00 per team.

If you want to catch trout, your best bet is to fish Power Bait off the docks. Anglers are bagging rainbow and lightning trout averaging 2 pounds while soaking PowerBait and other baits.

The Lake Amador Hatchery is currently rearing 5,000 rainbows, now averaging 1 / 3 to ½ lb. each that will be up to 1-1 / 2 to 2 pounds by October or November.

The hatchery is also raising a total of 40,000 trout fry, a mixture of rainbows, steelhead and cuttbows.“ We should release these fish into the lake in the fall of 2018,” said Lee Lockhart at the Lake Amador Resort.

Shad Anglers Concentrate On Upper River

SACRAMENTO- Want to catch some hard-fighting shad?

Then head to the upper stretch of the American River from Sunrise Avenue to Nimbus Dam.

That was the advice of Alan Fong at Fisherman’ s Warehouse, who recommended fishing with 1 / 32 oz. jigheads, tipped with champagne tails, weighed down with one or two split shot.

“ Some of the fish are already spawned out,” said Fong.“ Most are females in the 2 to 3 lb. range.”

Shore anglers are also picking up a few striped bass up to 15 pounds while tossing out jerkbaits and ripbaits on the Sacramento above the mouth of the American, according to Fong.

The Bureau of Reclamation ramped down water releases from Nimbus Dam in the American from 5,000 cfs to 4,000 cfs on June 22 through June 24 for“ storage management,” reported Peggy Manza of Reclamation.

Trollers Nail Trout, Crappie & Bass

WINTERS- When you troll at Berryessa, your next fish could be a trout, crappie or largemouth, spotted or smallmouth bass. All five species are hitting at the lake now. Rich Crispi of TW Guide Service reported summer variety action on his first downrigger trolling adventure to Lake Berryessa this year.

“ We did great,” said Crispi.“ We had lots of strikes, lots of fish, lots of released fish, including bass and crappie. We had 25 grabs total.”
