Young Jaxson Filice of Gilroy was fishing a Berkley Powerworm at Gilroy’ s Coyote Lake recently and hooked up with this beautiful largemouth bass. That’ s Jaxson’ s dad and fishing partner Vince Filice helping him show off the big fish.

Fishermen have been using prepared baits, nightcrawlers or chicken livers, reported Joe Sullivan of the East Bay Regional Park District.
If you want to hook crappie and bluegill, fish jigs or worms at the Boat Ramp area or Channel Point.
Black bass are in their summer pattern. Toss out top water lures early and late in the day and fish jigs and plastics in deeper water during the day.
Sullivan hasn’ t heard any reports of rainbow trout or striped bass caught lately.
DAVIS / FRENCHMAN LAKES
CDFW Plants 2,000 Lbs Of Rainbows
PORTOLA – Trout fishing is still tough at Davis Lake, but expect the fishing to pick up with the arrival of two plants of catchable rainbows from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.
“ The Department planted 2,000 pounds of rainbows last week and plans to make another plant this coming week,” said Jeanne Graham of J & J Grizzly Store and Camping
Resort.
Fly fishing remains the top technique for getting trout.“ Anglers have been catching and releasing rainbows while fishing the damsel fly hatches at Cow Creek,” said Graham.“ There was also a good hex fly hatch, but the trout were not biting.”
Boaters are trolling red dot frog Needlefish and Dick Nite copper red head lures at 20 feet or deeper. The best area is from the Lighting Tree to Big Island and back.
Bank fishermen are tossing out Power Bait for the trout at Grasshopper Point.“ A couple of guys will go out and maybe catch two to three trout,” she noted.
Brown bullhead catfish action is good in the Catfish Cove and off Eagle Point.“ The fish range from 1 to 2 pounds and are hitting nightcrawlers and catfish PowerBait,” he advised.
Increasing numbers of largemouth bass are showing.“ A couple of guys in a boat reported catching and releasing 13 bass, topped by a 4 lb. largemouth, while casting Rapalas in the Jenkins Hill and Lightning Tree areas,” she said.“ Bass averaging 1-1 / 2 to 2 pounds are also hitting plastic worms.”
If you want to catch rainbows at Frenchman Lake, your top prospect is to troll Red Frog Needlefish and other lures on the lake’ s north
FRESHWATER
end off Turkey Point. Anglers are hooking 14 to 18 inch range in shallow water close to shore, advised Mark Tieslau at Mountain Hardware in Blairsden.
“ Bank fishing is OK at Turkey Point, but you need to cast a long ways out to get your PowerBait or nightcrawler in deep water,” he advised.“ You want to float the bait 3 feet off the bottom. Anglers who do this are catching a couple of fish each.”

DON PEDRO LAKE
Trollers Battle Holdover Rainbows To 4 Pounds
LA GRANGE – Rainbow trout are still a solid possibility at Don Pedro, and experienced anglers are picking up bright, fresh rainbows to 4 pounds in the main lake.
Patience and persistence are necessary to put together a limit as the bite changes from day to day. Heavy recreational boating has arrived at the lake on the weekends, and now also during the weekdays. The opening of Bonds Flat Road has improved access to the popular Flemings Meadow launch ramp.
Monte Smith of Gold Country Sport Fishing said,“ On our trip this week, we had to work for two limits of rainbows to 4 pounds, finishing by 1:30 p. m. Every day can’ t be great, and it was a different bite that took some looking around and picking away at the fish before we finished up.”
“ We hooked a fish immediately, but after losing it, I saw a fish at 60 feet so we dropped the downrigger down to 55 feet, and the trout hit right away,” he explained.“ After catching this fish, the bite died, and we moved a few miles over to Middle Bay for slow action before returning to our previous spot. We picked away at them for the next few hours for limits to 4 pounds using my custom spoons, and the best depth was 26 feet.”
“ After catching several fish at this depth, I changed the lure to see if it was the lure or the depth, and the new lure was also catching fish. So despite the 80 degree surface temperature, there is a band of cold water just below the surface,” Smith concluded
King salmon and kokanee remain scarce.

I still get requests for the book these days, so I’ ve decided to use the 10“ Delta Fishing Handbooks” I found as part of a very special offer.
