PYRAMID LAKE / WESTERN NEVADA
Trout Season Closed Until October
RENO - The trout season is closed at Pyramid Lake until October 1 . The season ended exactly as it does most years with minor fanfare and smallish trout . It ’ s not that there aren ’ t big fish available , but for some reason they don ’ t tend to bite very well at the end of June . Jeff Morris went out and related catching a bunch of little fish .
It is now illegal to fish from a vessel of any kind until October 1 , thus the somewhat popular Sacramento Perch fishery of yore is essentially closed . It is still legal to fish off the bank to target Sacramento Perch , but most perch are caught on the east shore of the lake around
the cliffs of Hell ’ s Kitchen and the tufa rocks at the Needles , and that area is closed to shore access except for tribal members . In essence , the lake is closed to fishing at this time .
For Western Nevada anglers looking for early summer action , there are very few options available . Every river , streams and trickle that flows east into the great basin from the Sierra is high , muddy and cold .
In fact , attempting to wade the Truckee , Carson or Walker Rivers could be downright suicidal . They are all flowing briskly and extremely cold . A few people have drowned in the Truckee River already this year , and others have been rescued .
With the high flows on local streams , still waters are providing the best opportunities to catch a fish of any kind . Knott Creek Reservoir in the far northwest corner of Nevada just opened , and the fishing was good over the opener .
Knott Creek is a small 100-acre lake high up in the Pine Forest Range . It is known for producing trophy rainbow and tiger trout up to about 6 pounds for artificial lure and fly fishermen .
Knott Creek is no picnic to get to , though .
Nick the Informative Fisherman caught and released this big Delta largemouth bass while tossing a topwater bird imitation this June .

Summer

Access is extremely difficult . It is a mandatory high clearance 4 wheel drive vehicle trek , and many vehicles have been broken by the road to Knott Creek .
The reward for those that make it to the lake are lots of quality trout in a beautiful setting .

REDDING / RED BLUFF
Sacramento River Salmon Season Set To Start July 16
REDDING - It ’ s almost here … The 2017 river salmon season on the Sacramento will open on July 16 and both anglers and guides are hoping to trade punches with kings !
“ I ’ ve been spending my time recently chasing wild rainbows on the Sacramento ,” reported Mike Bogue of Mike Bogue ’ s Guide Service . “ We ’ ve been getting great quality fish while back trolling a variety of plugs including Yakima Bait 3 inch Mag Lips . When the bite slows on plugs I ’ ve been drifting with glow bugs teamed with Pautzke Orange Deluxe eggs or small pieces of Pautzke cured roe .”
“ I ’ ll be available for salmon fishing once the season opens up on July 16 . I ’ ve got all my rods spooled and my lures are ready to go . All we need now is some salmon . Every opener is different and there ’ s really no way to tell how the fishing is going to be until you hit the river and run the gear ,” advised Bogue .
“ The trout fishing has been great on the river and I ’ m really looking forward to salmon season ,” said Robert Weese of Northern California Guide Service .
Weese isn ’ t sure where he ’ ll start the salmon . He might be down Corning way or he might be up in the lava country above Red Bluff . Robert will be out pulling plugs on the opener and he ’ ll quickly dial in on the action as it develops .

RIO VISTA
You Can Find Solitude Pursuing Stripers Now
RIO VISTA - Angling pressure remains light on both the Sacramento and San Joaquin Rivers as striped bass migrate to the bay and ocean .
Very few anglers were giving striped bass fishing a shot , according to Craig Kamikawa at Fisherman ’ s Warehouse in Sacramento .
“ You ’ ll always have guys giving bait fishing a shot anywhere on the river , but there isn ’ t much going on , at least not until salmon fishing starts up ,” he related .
“ If you ’ re wanting to give it a try , I ’ d head over to the San Joaquin and bait fish close to shore or along the shoals ,” he tipped . “ Other than that , you can try bass fishing along the tules or give catfishing a try with clams or mackerel ,” he added .
Salmon fishing begins on July 16th , with many anglers typically trying their hand around the Isleton area .
