much of the recreational boat traffic.”
“Over the past week or so the average
bass goes about a pound and the top fish
have gone about 2 pounds. Most of the bass
are spots at this time. A variety of lures will
work. I’ve been relying on a small yellow and
white Yo-Zuri Banana Boat walking bait,” said
Pleece.
“While the trout fishing has been slow in
Rollins, my buddy hit the Bear River below
Rollins and did well with dry flies. He caught
a mix of small wild browns and rainbows
while using a size 16 yellow parachute fly,”
added Pleece.
At Scotts Flat smallmouth bass can be
taken on topwater baits at first and last light.
Plastic worms and 3 inch grubs will draw
strikes throughout the day.
SACRAMENTO AREA
Salmon Opener Better Than
Expected In Metro Area
SACRAMENTO - Fishing on the
Sacramento River on the opening day of
salmon season, July 16, was better than
it has been over the past couple of years,
though still far from red hot.
The mouth of the American River at
Discovery Park produced the top action, with
some lucky anglers reporting limits or near-
limits of Chinooks while trolling spinners or
jigging with spoons.
“I told my friend, Duane of Auburn, it was
a waste to go fishing on the opener,” quipped
Alan Fong of Fisherman’s Warehouse in
Sacramento. “He and his buddy went fishing
anyway and they came by the shop with
three bright salmon weighing 30, 10 and 10
pounds. They caught them while using jigs in
the morning. He said they saw a lot of other
fish caught.”
Mike Motley landed a 15 lb. salmon while
jigging with a 3 oz. P-Line Lazer Minnow at
Discovery Park the same morning, said Tim
Boggs of Elkhorn Outdoors in Rio Linda.
Fishing was slow at Verona and downriver
out of Vieira’s Resort in Isleton opening day.
Fishing at Discovery Park also slowed down
Monday.

EL SOBRANTE - The trout fishing has
slowed to a crawl, but channel catfish and

reported Marcella Shoemaker of the Rocky

Grae Bryant of Oakland caught a catfish
weighing 5-½ lbs while using nightcrawlers
at the boat launch. Brian Qualle of El
Sobrante caught a 2 lb. catfish while using
nightcrawlers weighing 2 lbs at the boat
launch. Dimitri Shocron caught a catfish
