Mid-Summer Trouters Find Success

SPALDING - The trout fishing at Eagle Lake isn ’ t red hot , but it ’ s a lot better than it was last year at this time . The water level is up , the tui chubs are active and the trout are feeding . Some anglers are getting skunked , but most folks are scoring fish and some are rounding up limits .

For trollers spoons have been the ticket for hooking up .

“ I ’ ve had success while pulling Speedy Shiners in the South Basin ,” reported Cliff Spediacci of Hook & Ladder Guide Service . “ Slow presentations haven ’ t been working for me . I ’ ve hooked most of my fish running the lures between 2 and 3 miles per hour .”

Other anglers have reported success while pulling small frog pattern Needlefish , frog pattern Ex-Cels , frog and orange / brass Cripplures and orange Thomas Bouyants .

The top trolling depths in the South Basin range from 18 to 25 feet . If you get much deeper then 25 you ’ ll hook more chubs than trout . The average trout is running about 2 pounds and fish to 4 pounds are possible .

Bait anglers are started to hook up while free lining worms and drifting worms under bobbers in the same depth range trollers are working . The springs below Black Mountain and the Eagle ’ s Nest have been the hot spot for bait dunkers .

Dan Mathisen of Dan ’ s Delta Outdoors said , “ The frog bite was ‘ hit or miss ’ during last weekend ’ s Ultimate Frog Challenge , and the weights dropped off quickly after the top weights . Punching has been excellent with the Strike King Rage Craw in and color of red or bluegill pattern . The key is to find water movement , and I like to fish along the edges of the mats where the water is moving most .” A few salmon have been landed off of Humphrey ’ s Pier in Antioch with either Flying C or Vee-Zee spinners , and striped bass in the 25- to 30-inch range continue to be caught weekly off the Antioch Fishing Pier with fresh shad or sardines . The CSBA-West Delta Chapter Kid ’ s Fishing Derby will be held on August 12th on the Antioch Fishing Pier .

Bridgeport , The Twins & Virginias Boot Out Trout !

BRIDGEPORT - “ Bridgeport Reservoir is still one of the hot spots right now , the fishing from boats has been very good this past week ,” disclosed Jim Reid of Ken ’ s Sporting Goods . “ The shore fishing has turned off lately but if you have a boat , kayak or tube you should be able to do well .”

“ Bait anglers are fishing off of Rainbow Point and up in Buckeye Bay and having success with crawlers , Mice Tails , pinched crawlers and PowerBait . Trollers are still having great days with Needlefish , Rapalas , Thomas Buoyants and Speedy Shiners . We haven ’ t talked to very many anglers fly fishing the reservoir but you should be able to do well stripping streamers and possibly stillwater nymphing over in the Buckeye Bay Area right now ,” said Reid .

or from boats . The trolling has been a little hit and miss but some of the successful anglers have been using lead core line and trolling Rapalas , Speedy Shiners and Needlefish . Fly anglers are stripping streamers like matukas , seal buggers , Twin Lakes Specials and wooly buggers . Dropping a soft hackle , zug bug or aggravator prince is also a good call ,” tipped Reid .

“ The Virginias and Trumbull are producing some good action lately as well , lots of nice fish are being caught on all 3 lakes . Tubing or kayaking seems to be better than shore fishing but there are still some good reports from the shore coming in . Salmon Should Surge Into River Soon

YUBA CITY - Many local anglers , such as Bob Boucke of Johnson ’ s Bait and Tackle , have been leaving the Sacramento Valley heat to enjoy the hot salmon action on the ocean .

“ On my recent trip on the Hog Heaven , we caught our 42 salmon – full limits – within 45 minutes while trolling off Half Moon Bay ,” said Boucke . “ However , I didn ’ t catch any fish on my latest trip on the Feather River at Boyd ’ s Pump .”

“ The salmon are starting to move into San Francisco Bay from the ocean and should show in the Sacramento River and Feather soon ,” he noted . “ Right now anglers are just catching a few kings while trolling spinners from boats in the Yuba City area .”

A few anglers venturing out early and late in the day are hooking up some stripers while tossing out top water lures or fishing live and cut baits , but the heat during the middle of the day has kept people off the water . Expect to go throw a lot of undersized fish to catch the keeper-sized stripers .

Trollers Battle Beautiful Holdover Rainbows

FOLSOM - Get ready for an absolute shocker – for the first time in months , somebody has actually fished Folsom Lake for trout or salmon . Even more of a surprise – the fishing was pretty good .
