Salmon Move North Within Easy Reach of Harbor

EL GRANADA- After an amazing run of salmon southwest of the harbor off of the Deep Reef, the salmon schools have moved up off of the Pacifica coastline, and boats from

Halibut action has been awesome aboard the Bass Tub. These beautiful fish were landed during a late July live bait adventure.

Pillar Point and San Francisco Bay are meeting off of Pedro Point for up to limits of salmon.

The Farallons have been outstanding for rockfish and lingcod, and the islands are only an 18 mile run from Pillar Point. The flat calm weather has led to excellent ocean conditions during the past week.

Sherri Ingles of Half Moon Bay Sport Fishing reported outstanding action for salmon north of the harbor, stating,“ If you can hang onto your fish, you will come home with a limit. Rockfishing remains excellent with the access to deeper water, and the ocean has been flat calm for the past week.”

On Sunday, August 6th, both Captain Dennis Baxter of the New Captain Pete and Tom Mattusch of the Huli Cat went north to the Pedro Point area for near-limits of salmon with plenty of opportunities for two fish per customer.

Baxter said,“ We came up a few fish short of 16 limits with 26 salmon working from Egg Rock north to Mussel Rock, and the overall bite was slower today as the salmon have gone deeper with the water temperature rising to 60 degrees. The fish are cookie-cutters in the 5 to 8-pound range, but there is an occasional jackpot fish up in the 20-pound range.”

A few white sea bass are also showing up with the market-grade squid that has been accumulating. There aren’ t enough sea bass to say that the bite is even close to being hot, but the fish are starting to show up. There are anchovies mixed in with the krill, and the commercial squid boats are focusing on anchovies since there isn’ t enough mass of squid to justify the drags.

The warm water has led to private boats running offshore for albacore, and Mike Velasquez with Captain Tom Joseph on the Serra Bella went 75 miles

to score some albacore and a bluefin tuna. A school of bluefin tuna was observed offshore, but the anglers on the Sea Angel decided to leave them alone since they were in the 12- to 14-pound range.

Boaters Battle Lingcod And Rockfish Off Point Sur, Point Lopez

MOSS LANDING – Anglers fishing aboard the Kahuna have experienced top-notch rockfish and lingcod action off the Big Sur Coast with the arrival of calm seas.

On Saturday, August 5, the 24 anglers aboard the Kahuna landed 26 lingcod, 1 ocean whitefish, 48 vermilion rockfish, 124 rockfish, 32 rockfish and 20 canary rockfish, reported Carol Jones of Kahuna Sportfishing.

On the day before, 16 anglers landed limits of rockfish including 5 cabezon to 10 Pounds and 20 lingcod.

This lady angler was all smiles after boating this quality Marin Coast lingcod aboard the Happy Hooker on July 26.
