release angling for trout to reduce stress during the current heat wave. A portion of the rainbow trout have external parasites called copepods that can be scraped off the fish prior to cooking. Fish parasites do not pose a threat to people when cooked properly.

On the salmon fishing front, salmon action in Rogue Bay continues to be pretty good. The majority of salmon are being caught downstream of Hwy. 101. Anglers are mainly using anchovies or anchovies rigged with a spinner blade. Bank anglers have been picking up Chinook on a regular basis fishing from the North jetty or the sand spit. Some of the best lures have been spinners or spoons.

On the Umpqua, Chinook fishing in the estuary has begun with a few being caught around Reedsport. It is only a matter of time before the bank angling in and around Winchester Bay picks up. From July 1 – Dec. 31, anglers can harvest two wild Chinook per day, and in combination with the other salmon / steelhead recorded on your salmon tag, up to 20 fish total. Fin-clipped hatchery fish can be recorded on a separate hatchery harvest tag that is available. There is no limit on the number of hatchery tags that can be purchased. Daily limits still apply.

“ Then the fish disappeared and so did the bite. We worked hard to get the final 8 kokanee, which took until noon to catch. The overall quality of the fish was excellent, with 2 over 16 inches.”

Netzel has been catching the fish on Radical Glow tubes in pink / natural green and Rocky Mountain Recreation Company double glow pink planktons and organ planktons.

“ Make sure your leaders are short, about 8 inches or less behind the dodger, and that will get you the fish,” he tipped.

On the day before his most recent trip, Netzel’ s clients caught full limits of kokanee on both the morning and afternoon trips.

LAKE TAHOE

Visiting Anglers Find Blue Skies And Hookups

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE- August is tourist time in the Tahoe Basin and a lot of these visitors are jumping on half day or full day fishing charters. Mackinaw have been plentiful on these trips, but kokanee remain elusive.

Gene St. Denis of Blue Ribbon Charters has been putting his clients on limits of mackinaw while fishing off Cal Neva Point, Sugar Pine Point and Dollar Point in water that ranges from 100 to 240 feet deep.

Gene is primarily pulling threaded minnows behind white dodgers, but he’ s been mixing Flatfish and minnow plugs into his spread.

The average mackinaw being caught these days runs 2 to 4 pounds, but with determination and patience, double-digit fish up to 12 pounds have been landed in recent days.

Mickey Daniels of Mickey’ s Big Mack Charters works the north end of Tahoe in Carnelian Bay.

Daniels uses a combination of Sling Blade dodgers, Kok-A-Nuts and tubes to hook macks residing primarily in deep water.

Anglers fishing with Daniels catch macks to 7 pounds. Some of the

fish are kept for the table. The rest are tagged and released.

WEST DELTA

Fall Striper Fishing Kicks Off Early

BRANNAN ISLAND- Striped bass that had been feeding in San Francisco Bay a month ago have now migrated back into the Delta and anglers are nailing limits of schoolie-size bass that weigh up to 8 pounds.

Captain David Hammond of Delta Pro Fishing has been putting his clients on easy limits of stripers since the end of July, while fishing both the San Joaquin and Sacramento Rivers. Hammond has been trolling deep running Yo- Zuri Crystal Minnows teamed with worm tails for his fish.

“ I’ ve been trolling the Sacramento River below Rio Vista every couple days for the past few weeks,” related Fish Sniffer reader Frank Mathews.“ I’ ve been getting from 6 to 24 stripers per day depending on the conditions. Some days weeds have been an issue. I’ ve been pulling deep running Yo-Zuris. Red and pearl and rainbow trout have both been good colors for me. Most of the bass I’ m catching run from 16 to 26 inches.”

There are sturgeon holding in deep water areas near Pittsburg, but few anglers are fishing for the. If you go you’ ll want to have eel, roe and pile worms. The best fishing has been taking place during outgoing tides, but this is also the toughest time to anchor with a prevailing westerly wind.
