BERKELEY- Salmon fishing ranges from good to excellent outside the Golden Gate depending on the day and conditions . For example , Berkeley ’ s New Easy Rider has been on tear recently , averaging from 1.5 fish per rod to limits while trolling rigged bait off the Marin Coast .

The salmon being boated in recent days range up to 25 pounds . The New Easy Rider ’ s most recent trip produced 25 limits of quality kings .

Captain Hayden Mullins of Dragon Sportfishing has been putting his clients on limit style salmon fishing daily from his beautiful 55 foot cruiser . Most days Mullins and crew are finished by 10 in the morning !

Live bait potluck fishing has been going strong for lingcod , stripers , halibut and rockfish .

Captain James Smith of California Dawn Sportfishing has been putting his clients on epic action . For example , on his most recent trip his 34 anglers boated 68 stripers , 34 lingcod , 174 rockfish and a keeper halibut . The previous day Smith ’ s anglers scored 10

3102 lings , 180 rockfish and 60 bass .

Captain Chris Smith of Happy Hooker Sportfishing has been focused on coastal rockfish and lingcod action in recent days with ocean conditions too rough to allow him to get offshore .

The results have been good with anglers averaging a lingcod or better per rod and ¾ limits of rockfish . The average lingcod has been going 7 to 8 pounds and the biggest fish range up into the middle 20 ’ s .

Captain Quang Vo of the Goldeneye 2000 has been working the Farallons when the weather permits for limits of big rockfish and 1.5 lingcod per rod

salmon coming south from Point Arena within the near future .

Commercial fishermen have been working the area north of Bodega Bay with some success , and these fish have to pass by Bodega Bay before heading into the Golden Gate . Rockfishing remains outstanding , and most anglers are either targeting rockfish near Point Reyes or heading north to the Fort Ross / Timber Cove area for rockfish limits and around a ling cod per rod .

The weather conditions have been excellent , and Captain Rick Powers of Bodega Bay Sport Fishing has been either heading south below Ten Mile Beach or north to Timber Cove for limits of quality rockfish . He went south on Friday , August 18th for 16 limits of rockfish and 19 ling cod . He said , “ I haven ’ t heard much on the salmon front , but commercial boats off of Point Arena have been scoring up to 25 salmon per day , and these fish should be sliding through the local waters in the coming days or even a week .”

Private boats continue to troll for salmon off of Ten Mile Beach , and although the conditions look good with brown water , scattered bait balls of anchovies from 30 to 60 feet , and birds on the surface , anglers are reporting not so much as a scratched bait for their efforts . A lone salmon was landed on a six-pack trying for halibut off of Ten Mile after limiting out on rockfish at Point Reyes .

Eric Holthouse of North Bay Charters went north to Timber Cove on Saturday , August 19th for limits of quality rockfish including a number of vermilions and a ling per rod for 4 anglers . He said , “ It has been a bit tougher on the lings lately , but we are finding a nice assortment of rockfish using whole squid on live bait rigs .”
