AMERICAN RIVER
It’ s A Hard Grind For Salmon
SACRAMENTO- Salmon fishing is tough in the American River from Discovery Park to Nimbus Dam. That should change when the weather cools down and more fish move up the river from the ocean and bay.
“ Boats fishing at the mouth of the American at Discovery Park are picking up a few salmon while trolling spinners and a variety of plugs,” revealed Dennis Phanner at Sacramento Pro Tackle.“ Of every 15 boats, maybe only two will catch fish. There’ s just not a lot of fish in the system yet.”
Phanner said boaters trolling Silverton spinners are picking up a few kings in the river near the water intake above the Fair Oaks Avenue Bridge.
“ Salmon fishing in the American is still fairly slow,” confirmed Craig Kamikawa of Fisherman’ s Warehouse.“ Anglers are hooking a few fish in the 8 to 10 lb. range in Nimbus Basin on beads and spinners.”
Kamikawa hasn’ t heard much about striper fishing success lately on the river. Anglers interested in hooking some stripers should toss out swimbaits and wake baits above the Hazel Avenue Bridge.
Water releases from Nimbus Dam to the lower American continue to be 3,500 cfs, reported Peggy Manza of Reclamation.

BERRYESSA LAKE
Trout & Bass Anglers Gear Up For Fall Turnover
WINTERS- Fat holdover rainbow trout are on tap for anglers fishing at Lake Berryessa, but fishing pressure slowed down during the recent heat wave.
Troy Barr of T-Roy’ s Guide Service hasn’ t been out on Berryessa for two weeks – and is switching over now to salmon fishing on the Sacramento River in downtown Sacramento. On his last trip of the season, the two anglers fishing with Barr hooked 15 fish, landing 10 fat, chunky trout in the 15 to 17 inch range by noon at 40 to 60 feet deep.
Barr was using chrome and purple Apex lures and Brad’ s Kokanee Cut Plugs, tipped with Pautzke Fire Corn emeasered with herring oil. They hooked the fish while trolling at a speed of 2 to 2-1 / 2 mph from north side of the Narrows to the main body of the lake.
When the water temperature cools down, expect the rainbow fishing to improve for bank anglers and trollers as the lake turns over. During the fall turn over, fishing with nightcrawlers and minnows from shore can be as productive as fishing from a boat.
“ The bass are still in their summer mode,” said Don Paganelli of Paganelli’ s Bass Fishing Experience.“ They haven’ t transitioned into their fall pattern yet – this will hopefully happen so soon as the water temperature cools down.”
He recommended drop shotting with Robo Worms at 20 feet deep for a mixture of largemouth, spotted and smallmouth bass.

BURSON- The elevation at Lake Camanche was approximately 226 feet as of this report and 84 % of capacity. Camanche’ s releases have slowed to approximately 444 C. F. S. while receiving 318 C. F. S. from Lake Pardee, according to Terry Willard at the Camanche Recreation Company.
Kristy and Mike Carpentier reported terrific fishing on a trip they made to Camanche.
“ With the weather a little cooler than last weekend, Mike and I decided to make a run for some trout, said Kristy.“ We got a late 8 am start.”
‘ We trolled the main lake all day,” she said.“ It started out slow, with a fish here and there until we found a sweet spot in the deep channel that we farmed for a total of nine trout and three bass. One small trout was released, as well as the bass. We lost a few fish also.”
The trout were 14-19” long. They landed the fish while trolling 2.6-3.0 mph 28-38 feet down with Speedy Shiners in gold and purple / blue. They also employed Gvf Lures Golden wonderbread spin lures.
“ We didn’ t get our limits, but we did land 12 fish and that’ s a
