Bucks For‘ Kokes, Almanor For Trout

CHESTER- Captain Bryan Roccucci of Big Daddy’ s Guide Service is still chasing kokanee salmon at Bucks Lake.

The majority of the fish are still chromebright, but a few dark fish have shown up signaling that the end of salmon season is close at hand at Bucks.

The fish being caught at this point are running about 13 inches long. Roccucci has been relying on Paulina Peak dodgers and hoochies for his hookups.

Once Big Daddy is finished at Bucks he’ ll turn his attention to fall trout action at both Lake Almanor and Eagle Lake.

At Lake Almanor, trouters have noted an upturn in the action with a decrease in boat traffic in the wake of the Labor Day holiday. Trout and salmon are holding in deep water that ranges from 30 to 50 feet deep. The top offering has been either a threaded night crawler or a threaded Gulp! crawler.

Speedy Shiners and Artic Fox trolling flies have created some strikes too.

There have been some smallish fish in the mix, but rainbows to 4 pounds have been fairly common. Look for the action to continue improving as the days get shorter and the water temperature drops.

Big Cats Top Summer, Early Fall Catches

IONE – As anglers wait for the weather to cool down and the water

temperature to cool at Lake Amador, anglers are picking up some hefty catfish on a variety of offerings.

The Lake Amador Catfish Derby, scheduled from 7 pm on September 8 to 7 am the next day, produced some giant catfish for the 53 participating anglers.

Jesse Makenson won first place with an 18.50 lb. channel catfish, while Justin Fountain finished second with a 15.1 lb. catfish. Luis Maravilla finished third with a 14.40 lb. catfish.

“ The anglers caught the fish in anywhere from 4 to 40 feet of water,” said Lee Lockhart at the Lake Amador Resort.“ The top two fish were released back into the lake, although the third place fish died.” The smaller catfish are

hitting nightcrawlers, while the larger ones are hitting chicken liver and mackerel. In addition to the fish hooked during the derby, anglers have caught cats ranging from 15 to 22 pounds over the past couple of weeks.

“ The south side coves toward the launch ramp are producing the top action,” for some reason, people haven’ t reported catching cats from the south side. Lately.

The lake is 13 feet from full and the water temperatures are still warm, although an exact water temperature wasn’ t available at press time.

Anglers continue to catch a lot of bass on crankbaits, Senkos and plastic worms. The fish range from 1-1 / 2 to 5 pounds, with an occasional 7 to 8 pounder.
