Larry and grandson David, had a great day floating down river. The fish are in the river biting and bending rods at almost every stop.”
“ The weather is beginning turn cold and everywhere you look colors are vibrant and bring that cozy warm holiday season to mind. The weather on Wednesday was darn near perfect cool and crisp in the morning Sunny and warm in afternoon,” he noted.
“ Simply put, Margi Larry and David had a double-digit day catching and releasing hard fighting fish as well as fantastic scenery and weather. We caught fish on 3.0 Maglips lathered in Pro-Cure Carpspit and bouncing roe cured in Pro-Cure egg brine,” he noted.
LOS VAQUEROS RESERVOIR
Rainbows, Stripers Highlight Catches
BYRON- Recent trout plants at Los Vaqueros have boosted the fishing considerably.
“ Some anglers are limiting out on trout, though not everybody is,” said Brian Demmunik of the Los Vaqueros Marina.“ Anglers are hooking the fish while using garlic-scented PowerBaits, nightcrawlers or Kastmaster lures in South Cove and Oak Point as well as past the Rockwall.”
Mt. Lassen stocked 1000 pounds of rainbows on October 19 and another 1000 pounds the week of October 30.“ We have planted 4,000 pounds of trout over the past month,” stated Demmunik.
Striper fishing is fair with fewer shakers showing up but more medium to large fish being caught.“ We’ re seeing more fish in the 20 to 22-inch range now,” said Demmunik.“ The pier by the Marina and from Oak Point south towards South Cove are yielding the best action.”’
Wayne Pearl of San Ramon landed a 12.45-pound striper in Penn Cove using a swimbait.
“ Striper boils have slowed some, but are still being seen here and there,” stated Demmunik.“ Early morning is the best time to find the boils all around the lake. If you happen across a boil, top water lures
are doing a good job catching fish. From shore, cut anchovies or shad are the baits of choice.”
A few anglers are hooking some quality channel catfish. Just ask Alexander Vasquez of Oakland, who bagged a 5.45-pound catfish in Cowboy Cove while using an anchovy.
“ During November, we’ ll have night fishing every Friday from 5 p. m. to 8 p. m. near the Marina. It starts on Friday, Nov. 3,” added Demmunik.
The reservoir is currently storing 150,200 acre-feet, 94 percent of its 160,000-acrefoot capacity. Pumping has stopped. Water levels will slowly drop due to evaporation and absorption. The water temperature is between 65 and 67 degrees.
NEW MELONES LAKE
Trollers Experience Top Trout Action
ANGELS CAMP- Trollers continue to pick up hefty rainbow trout on New Melones Lake., but the bite has definitely tapered off from the solid bite of this summer.
“ With the water cooling off, the rainbow bite has slowed down a bit on New Melones,,” said Gary Burns of Take It to the Limit Guide Service.“ For the first time this summer the surface temperature hit the high sixties and the bows are moving up.”
“ I have been catching bows from 60’ down to 76’, whereas three weeks ago we were hooking bows down at 110’,” he remarked.“ The bows seem to be spreading out some, so you need to put more time on the water to put the big boys in the boat.”
“ We are still fishing the Carson area and working our way up to Coyote Cove. There’ s not one single lure that’ s working for us- troll Needlefish, Excels or Krocodiles from 1.8 to 2.5 mph,” said Burns.
Kevin Olson of Valley Springs was trolling for trout with a gold Excel lure when he landed 4 lb. 11 oz. rainbow He was trolling Carson Cove at 52 ft. deep, according to
QWEST EDGE 16’-20’
Gene Hildebrand at Glory Hole Sports.
Crappie?“ Look for crappie in the marina area at 20 ft. When you get your first hookup, you can expect to stay in the same area and load up your stringer with some nice fish,” he tipped.
Dave and Trevor Ferguson landed some quality crappie near the marina while using Sep’ s grubs in pearl with Kalin 1 / 16 oz. jig heads.
‘ The lake is cooling off, and is having an impact on all the fish in the lake, including the bass,” said Hildebrand.“ The bass anglers are having the best results using the plastics, and jigs in the Johnny C./ Sculpin patterns, according to the California Bass Anglers.”
The Glory Hole Sports Catfish Tournament started Nov. 1., added Hildebrand
New Melones Lake level is currently at 1053.80 and 29.20 ft. from full. Water temperature up river is 60 degrees and mid lake it is at 64 degrees.
OROVILLE LAKE
Les Myers and Mike Bard Win First Place in Gold Country Showdown
OROVILLE – If last weekend’ s duck season opener was anything close to last weekend’ s stingy bite at the FPT’ s“ Gold Country Showdown” event at Lake Oroville, then it is for sure that a good number of hunters ate roast chicken instead of roast duck for dinner.
For FPT competitors fishing that“ Gold Country Showdown” event not only faced the daunting challenge of competing on a clear, deep-water lake currently hundreds of feet below normal pool, and a day that would prove to yield only a few limits over

6 pounds, but also had to keep focused on the task-objective of finishing high enough to secure one of only 100 berths available in the Tour’ s year-end championship event known as the Coors Light Future Pro Tour Classic.
But Les Myers and Mike Bard, possessing only a mere three years’ experience in organized competition, put a plan together that combined both skill and fortitude – and a variety of techniques, to overcome all of the challenges mentioned above, and best a field of 75 tough competitors to capture their first-ever Coors Light Future Pro Tour victory.
“ We have been pacing ourselves from the moment we started fishing this tour”,
