“ Well, the sauce sure seemed to make a difference on Sunday, as the guys caught and released 12 adult steelhead and over 20 fish total. The adults were in 2 to 6 lb. class and put up great fights.,” he said.
“ These Klamath steelhead are beginning to stake out their territory and when you throw a plug near them, they are blasting it.,” said Caldwell.“ They often follow the plug and are crushing it within a foot or two of the boat. It’ s pretty exhilarating when you can see them hit it.”
“ Catching these wonderful Klamath fish will continue all winter, so don’ t let the colder ugly weather keep you from experiencing some peace and quiet and fantastic fishing,” he added.
LOS VAQUEROS RESERVOIR
Anglers Battle Huge Trout, Stripers & Catfish
BYRON- Trout fishing is holding steady and anglers are hooking increasing numbers of keeper striped bass at Los Vaqueros. Don’ t rule out catfishing, despite the colder weather; one lucky fisherman reeled in 14.3 lb. catfish.
Gayle Green of San Jose topped the big trout parade over with past couple of weeks when he caught a 9.7 lb. rainbow while using Power Bait in South Cove.
Manuel Sandoval of Burlingame landed a 9.32 lb. trout also while fishing PowerBait in South Cove, reported Brian deMunnik of the Los Vaqueros Marina. Nic Bilbao of Fremont reeled in an 8.4 lb. rainbow while soaking PowerBait in South Cove.
“ Another angler landed a 7.67 lb. trout while using chartreuse garlic PowerBait in South Cove.,” tipped deMunnik.“ Two 5 + pounders, 5.9 and 5.4 pounds, respectively, were caught on Kastmasters in Peninsula Cove”.
“ We’ re seeing a lot of limits of trout,” said deMunnik.“ Shore anglers are using garlic PowerBait and crawlers in South Cove, while rental boaters are trolling Kastmasters and Rapalas. In Howden Cove.”
Jorge Gallegos of San Leandro topped the recent striper catches with a 12.61 lb. fish fooled with an anchovy in Cowboy Cove.
“ More limits of stripers in the 19 to 22-inch range are starting to show,” said deMunnik.“ Shore anglers are using cut anchovies or shad for bait in the marina and rockwall areas. If you happen across a boil, top water lures are doing a good job

Catfish action continues to be productive for anglers tossing out anchovies and chicken liver. William Aviles of Concord landed a14.6 lb. catfish while bait fishing in Peninsula Cove.
Gou Yang of Sacramento used an anchovy to trick a 10.51 lb. cat in Cowboy Cove. Another fisherman fooled a 6 lb. catfish with an anchovy in Cowboy Cove.
The reservoir is currently storing 149,500 acre-feet, 93 percent of its 160,000-acrefoot capacity. The water temperature is between 62 and 64 degrees.
NEW MELONES LAKE
New Record 9 Lb. 10 Oz. Rainbow Landed
ANGELS CAMP- The rainbow trout records keep breaking at New Melones Reservoir.

Brentwood and Livermore off Vasco Road are cleaning out the boat, and putting the rods away till the fishing picks up, Joann Dunn of Linden was out bright and early, landing the new New Melones Lake record rainbow trout weighing in at 9 lb. 10 oz.,” reported Gene Hildebrand of Glory Hole Sports.”

“ This breaks the current record( 8 lb. 4 oz.) by 1 lb. 6 oz. that was caught by Ken Hopper just a mere 40 days ago,” said Hildebrand.“ Joann reported she was fishing in the Carson Creek area trolling at 37 ft. and hooked up at 7:30 am using shad for bait.”
Despite the beautiful fish that have been brought in to Glory Hole Sports the last couple weeks, anglers are still waiting for the trout action to return in force, according to Hildebrand.
“ Anglers will occasionally bring in nice fish, as Pauli Madsen showed us this week with a 5 lb. 10 oz. rainbow trout,”

said Hildebrand. Another Glory Hole Sports customer brought in an 8 lb. 8 oz. trout by trolling at 90 ft. in Carson Cove.
“ Are the trout near top water or are they deep? They’ re pretty much where ever you catch them right now,” said Hildebrand.
With the temperatures in the 50s and 40s, the energy levels of black bass diminish as their body temperature matches the water temperatures.
” The metabolism of the bass slows down processing the bait fish they have caught,” said Hildebrand.“ With this in mind, they are not much inclined to chase some high speed ripbait all over the lake trying to get some nourishment as winter sets in. Slow down your presentation; try using a crawfish colored jig with a trailer or a drop shot craw. Swimbait season will soon be upon us for some exciting bass action.”
The Glory Hole Sports Catfish Derby contestants have reported a tough bite on the cats over the past couple of weeks.
“ There have been ten catfish weighed in, and the weight to beat right now is 21.56 lbs. on two fish.,” noted Hildebrand.“ Melones does have, and can produce a catfish that could win this tournament with just one fish.” The crappie bite has slowed down. New Melones Lake level is currently at 1051.09 and 36.91 ft. from full. The water level had dropped to the year low of 1050.00 before rising to current level.
OROVILLE LAKE
Few Anglers Trying For Bass, Salmon
OROVILLE – Fishing pressure for both black bass and king salmon is very light at Lake Oroville now, since boat launching is available only on the gravel at the Bidwell Canyon Recreation Area. You must have a 4-wheel-drive vehicle to launch, reported Bob Boucke at Johnson’ s Bait and Tackle.
