18 FRESHWATER Dec. 8 - 22, 2017 VOL.36 • ISS. 26 FRESHWATER REPORTS: gearing up for striper trips on the Delta and trout trolling adventures on New Melones and Don Pedro reservoirs. - Dan Bacher CONTINUED FROM PG 12 REDDING/RED BLUFF cont. today and every one of them hit the roe,” disclosed Weese. If you’d like to hit the water with Weese, he can be reached at (530) 755-7196. Legendary north valley salmon guide Mike Bogue of Mike Bogue’s Guide Service has been off the water for several days for an epic whitetail deer and elk hunting adventure in Montana. Mike is back in California now and will be on the water a lot during the final weeks of the season. “I really like the late season fishing. Some of the best eating salmon of the year show up at this time and traditionally this is when we encounter some real monsters. I’m sure we’ll catch some nice fish; whether we see the really big fish is a wait and see proposition,” Bogue laughed. To book a trip with Mike Bogue give him a ring at (530) 246-8457. RIO VISTA Striper Enthusiasts Hit Decker, Sherman Islands RIO VISTA - Striped bass continue to be landed in the area, while sturgeon fishing continues to improve. Anglers tossing bait and lures found feisty striped bass this week, according to Craig Kamikawa, assistant manager at Fisherman’s Warehouse in Sacramento. “Decker and Sherman Islands have their share of big schools of stripers right now. There’s been a bit of bird activity at times and the stripers are right there with them, pushing bait to the surface,” he tipped. “One of our guys was heading home the other day and he stopped short on a big school by Decker Island. He limited on small keeper stripers in two casts,” said Kamikawa. “If you’re looking to bait fish, I’d find 28 feet of water and toss out sardines or anchovies. The frozen bait isn’t great, so you’ll need to toss them in brine. Brite and Tite works great,” Kamikawa said. Sturgeon fishing was spotty locally. “The guys who are fishing for them are basically squatting and rotting. Anchor up and sit for a few hours and wait for a bite or two. Sherman, Decker and Liberty Islands are all good places to try,” he advised. - Roland Aspiras SANTA CLARA VALLEY LAKES Slow Your Approach For Bass Success Doug Greening shows off a massive 6 pound Lake Shasta rainbow that couldn’t lay off a Hum Dinger Spoon. SACRAMENTO AREA Salmon Fishing Slows Down SACRAMENTO - Salmon fishing in the Sacramento River in the metropolitan area has slowed down, while striper fishing in the Port of Sacramento and Deep Water Channel is perking up. “Probably your best bet now is bait fishing with bloodworms and pileworms for stripers and sturgeon in the Sacramento below Rio Vista or striper fishing in the Port of Sacramento and Deep Water Channel,” said Dennis Pfanner at Sacramento Pro Tackle. He recommended anglers pursuing stripers in the port to look for shad boils and birds working bait schools. “Troll with Bombers and Yo-Zuris, tipped with wormtail jigs, or jig with Duh spoons.” “The fishing was very slow during our annual Squirrel Haven Regatta on the Sacramento,” said Jerry Lampkin of TNG Motor Sports Guide Service. “Two guys reported hooking up salmon, but nobody landed any during the event. The water was really muddy.” “The fishing was tough on the last day I was out,” said James Netzel of Tight Lines Guide Service. “We had to clean off our lines every five minutes. On the previous trip, we had two grabs, but didn’t land any fish. However, some anglers caught some gorgeous fish in the 15 lb. class.” Anglers continue to troll with Brad’s Cut Plugs and Pro Troll Flashers in the stretch of river from Miller Park to Garcia Bend. Monte Smith of Gold Country Sportfishing is done salmon fishing on the Sacramento River this season and now is COYOTE - Anglers willing to slow their approach found largemouth bass this week, while other angling interest waned. Jigs and finesse tactics were the top recommend approach, according to Alex Tran at Coyote Bait and Tackle. “The guys fishing from shore at both Calero and Anderson are doing pretty good. Right now they’re finding fishing from 10-15 feet down. Drag a jig or drop shot, but you can also try tossing some topwater or reaction like a ripbait, spinnerbait or chatterbait in the mornings, late in the evenings or when there’s some cloud cover,” Tran tipped. Coyote, Uvas and Chesbro were all slow. “We haven’t heard much about crappie lately. If you’re looking to fish for them, try in deep water by the boat launch at Calero,” he advised. Catfish action was also slow at press time. - Roland Aspiras SHADOW CLIFFS LAKE Trouters Limit! PLEASANTON – Trout limits are being pulled from all over Shadow Cliffs Lake. “Fishing at Shadow Cliffs should continue to be fantastic the rest of the year,” said Joe Sullivan of the East Bay Regional Park District. “Shadow Cliffs has already received several fish plants this season, and is scheduled to get a fish plant every week CONTINUED ON PAGE 18 Powered by Clean, Quiet, Dependable Honda 4 Stoke Outboards.
