REDDING
Fair Weather & Mild Temperatures Make For Solid Trout Action
REDDING- Conditions are very pleasant for anglers visiting the Sacramento River downstream from Redding and the river’ s wild rainbows are on a good bite. With the holiday season if full swing, fishing pressure is light and will likely remain light for several weeks.
Guides that are fishing report 15 to 25 fish per day. Some guides are using fly gear, while others are working with spinning rods.
The Fly Shop reports that fly anglers are having success using baetis imitations in the afternoon and midges in the morning. There are some big stonefly on the move at times around boulders and clay banks. In these areas, large rubber leg nymphs have been effective and of course with salmon in the system you want to give egg imitations a try too.
Mike Bogue of Mike Bogue’ s Guide Service is offering conventional tackle trips on the river for anglers interested in fooling trout with crankbaits, glow bugs, Pautzke salmon eggs and Pautzke cured roe.
When working the shallower runs and riffles, Bogue utilizes back trolled crankbaits to cover the water. He probes the deeper water areas with bait and glow bugs. These

As of press time the river was flowing at 5,000 cfs and the clarity was good.

If you’ d like to take up the challenge of nailing a Sacramento River steelhead, stake out a gravel bar between Woodson Bridge and Anderson and go to work with standard steelhead offerings such as roe,‘ crawlers, beads and glo bugs. Spinners and spoons can work well at times too, particularly dark colored spinners.

“ The days are cold but it warms up pretty good in the afternoons and evenings. Shad and sardines are working good, but a few guys drift live bait are catching some too,” he noted.
“ There’ s still signs of bait between Sherman and Decker Island. That’ s where a lot of the fish are still hanging out.” he added.
Anglers in search of sturgeon were being sent south towards Pittsburg, where a spotty bite was being reported.
“ A lot of the guys are blanking right now with the cold temperatures. Everyone was on a hot roe bite before the water dipped below 52 degrees. It’ s anywhere between 48 and 52 now. Eel is the better bait to use, and some guys are running shrimp,” he said.
Sturgeon fishing remained slow at Liberty Island.“ We need more rain for the fish to spark up out there,” Kamikawa related.

planted rainbows at Rollins. The rainbow bite is good and the arrival of those rainbows seems to have sparked a brown trout bite too. It always blows me away how browns start to show right after a rainbow trout plant.”
“ I’ ve fished Rollins twice this week, once from my kayak and once from shore with my buddy Cole Jefferies. When I fished from the kayak I got a limit of trout in less than 3 hours at the mouth of Long Ravine Cove. In all I got 3 rainbows to 14 inches and 2 browns to 17.5 inches. Four of the trout hit a small broken back perch pattern Rapala. I got one rainbow on a chrome and chartreuse 1 / 6 ounce Speedy Shiner,” exclaimed Pleece.
“ When I bank fished with Cole we got a total of 9 trout while fishing Long Ravine Cove. 7 of them where rainbows to about 13 inches and two of them were browns to about 15 inches. The rainbows were caught on a combination of Zeke’ s Sierra Gold and PowerBait. Both brown came on night crawlers drifted 4 feet below a clear plastic bobber,” Pleece continued.
“ My dad and uncle tried fishing Scotts Flat again this week from the bank. They got skunked there, but they picked up 6 planter rainbows the next day when they fished Halsey Forebay. Red salmon eggs were the hot bait at Halsey,” said Pleece.

Metro Anglers Head Downriver For Stripers
SACRAMENTO- While striped bass fishing has slowed down in the metropolitan area, anglers are still hooking sturgeon and striped bass in the lower Delta.
James Netzel of Tight Lines Guide Service reported that Malcolm Petersen, deckhand Roy and himself caught a total of five keeper stripers to 5 pounds in Broad Slough on his latest trip. They also released 6 undersized fish while power drifting with mudsuckers.
“ All fish came on the incoming tide,” said Netzel.“ We could not buy a fish on the 2 hour slack tide where we fished in Broad Slough.”
