VOL.37 • ISS. 02 SALTWATER Jan 18 - Feb 2, 2018 31 SALTWATER REPORTS BERKELEY/MARTINEZ Cold Water Slows Sturgeon Action MARTINEZ - Captain Chris Smith of the Happy Hooker out of Martinez was in San Pablo Bay on Saturday, and they didn’t see a single sturgeon throughout the day. They ended up with seven striped bass and a leopard shark, and he picked up and moved to get away from the bass. Captain Steve Talmadge of Flash Sport Fishing out of Martinez said, “We put a recent two-man charter onto limits of sturgeon using straight eel in deep water at 44 feet near the Benicia/Martinez Bridge during max current on the outgoing tide during the middle of the week. We started out up above, but slid down to the bridge in deep water due to the mediocre tides. The water temperature has risen slightly in the water near the bridge from the 49/50-degree range to 50/51 degrees after the weekend’s rain.” “However, on our next trip, we only ended up with a few striped bass in the box while missing a few opportunities on sturgeon bites. There are a good number of fish by the fleet and the bridge. I found sturgeon on the bottom in the deeper water. We also had some jumper’s around us,” said Talmadge. John Badger of Barbarian Sport Fishing out of Martinez has a new boat, and he said, “It has been a tough bite in the Delta, but there is a better outgoing tide coming this week, and there have been fish landed up above from Buoy 6 towards the Benicia/ Martinez Bridge. We will most likely be heading in San Pablo Bay until the water warms up in Suisun Bay.” -David Hurley BODEGA BAY Perch, Crabs Dominate Sonoma Coast Winter Angling Tory Courreri shows off a limit of quality stripers that he landed on December 19 while fishing bait in the Petaluma River.
