Big Rainbow Plants Spark Up Trout Action
FREMONT –“ With the 4,930 pounds of trout we received in December and the additional 2750 pounds of trout we received during the first three weeks in January, fishing has been pretty good all over Horseshoe Lake but especially on the back side of the Peninsula,” reported Joe Sullivan of the East Bay Regional Park District.
The latest two plants they received were 1000 pounds of trout from CDFW the week of January 8th and 1000 pounds of trout from EBRPD the week of January 22nd.
Big fish honors go to EBRPD regular Joaquin Gutierrez, who landed two rainbow trout, including one weighing 8.17 lbs caught on a green spoon. The other was caught on an orange and chartreuse Mice Tail.
“ On another trip, Joaquin Gutierrez, Anthony Evans and Anthony’ s grandpa Elliot caught their limits on Horseshoe,” said Sullivan.“ They said that the action was non-stop for several hours. They used several different lures, including spoons,
spinners, and trout jigs in a variety of colors( green, orange, yellow and gold).”
Trevor Krug and his two buddies each caught their limit of trout, the largest two weighing six pounds, five ounces and seven pounds. They were fishing on the back side of the Peninsula using a Kastmaster and trout jigs.
Buddy Esperson of Hayward caught three trout with a combined weight of five and a half pounds. He was fishing Mice Tails from the Peninsula Point,
Jon Curtis of Fremont caught his limit of trout, topped by two fish weighing 4-1 / 2 and 6-1 / 2 pounds, while using green Power Eggs from the Peninsula.
Keith Dees of Fremont caught a sixpound trout in the Kiosk Cove while using a blue and silver Kastmaster.

REDDING
Dodge Rain, Hook Rainbows …
REDDING- The best news is that the Sacramento River’ s big bad wild rainbows are feeding heavily and cooperating with anglers. The good but damp news is that a fair amount of rain has been pushing through the north state recently, making for some wet days on the water for anglers that are determined to fish rain or shine.
Fly anglers working from drift boats are landing from 15 to 35 wild rainbow trout per day while working the stretch from Redding to Bonnyview.
The river is flowing at 4.000 cfs right now and the action has been really good.

Anglers are using egg imitations and a variety of different nymphs.
Mike Bogue of Mike Bogue’ s Guide Service is offering conventional tackle trips on the river for anglers interested in fooling trout with crankbaits, glow bugs, Pautzke salmon eggs and Pautzke cured roe.
When working the shallower runs and riffles, Bogue utilizes back trolled crankbaits to cover the water. He probes the deeper water areas with bait and glow bugs. These deep water areas are seldom hit by the fly guys and the action can be very good as a result.
Robert Weese of Northern California Guide Service is also offering jet boat trout trips on the Sacramento. Weese uses flies and plugs at times, but his go to offering is a lively cricket presented on spinning gear.
RIO VISTA
Bait Anglers Experience Top Striper Action
RIO VISTA- Striped bass continue to be landed locally by anglers soaking bait, while signs of sturgeon began to show.
Anglers soaking cut bait and drifting life bait found striped bass from Three Mile Slough down to Sherman Island last week, according to Craig Kamikawa at Fisherman’ s Warehouse in Sacramento.
“ There aren’ t many guys going for them, and the guys fishing are putting in time for a couple good fish. The good thing is most are in the four to five-pound class. Sardines, shad and anchovies are working on the anchor. You can also

3406 drift with jumbo minnows or mudsuckers,” Kamikawa tipped.
“ A few guys are trolling. The water is still in pretty good shape despite the recent rain. It’ s going to take a really big downpour to really get the water stained up. Temperatures are ranging between 48 and 52 degrees depending on where you are, and how deep you’ re fishing,” he added.
Sturgeon were beginning to make an appearance north of Rio Vista, according to Kamikawa.
“( Barry) Canevaro of Fish Hookers Sportfishing was up there last weekend and found a couple of good marks up by Lindsey and Shag. There wasn’ t a big concentration of them, but they are starting to group up.”
“ This time of year, I’ d recommend going with eel, night crawlers or shrimp up there. Or, a combination of two of those baits. Eel and night crawlers has been good the last couple of years,” he tipped.

ROLLINS / SCOTTS FLAT
Rainbows Delight Rollins Anglers
COLFAX-“ I haven’ t gotten into any browns, but I’ ve been catching and releasing big numbers of rainbows at Rollins Lake,” reported Jason Pleece of Meadow Vista.“ I fished Rollins twice last week in the rain and the fishing was good both times.”
“ Over the course of the two trips I probably landed and released more than 30 trout while trolling from my kayak. I’ ve gotten fish on full size flashers and Gulp! worms and on Needlefish trolled naked, but my best rig is a set of green Vance’ s Lil’ Slim Willie flashers with the largest blade removed teamed with a threaded Gulp! worm. The trout are in the top 10 feet so I’ m toplining the rig with no added weight,” tipped Pleece.
Bank anglers fishing at Rollins have been scoring government rainbows on PowerBait and inflated worms at Orchard Springs, Freeloaders Cove and in Long Ravine.
Fish Sniffer digital reader Tom Davis of Nevada City has been hooking some quality smallmouth bass at Scotts Flat Reservoir.
“ I’ ve been using suspending minnow baits to hook bass at Scotts Flat. I’ m just hiking the bank, casting to deep water and working the lures back with a stop, start and rip retrieve. I tried a variety of jigs and
