Crappie Highlight Late Winter Catches

CLEARLAKE – If you just want to hook fish , crappie fishing offers you the top option at Clear Lake at this time .

“ Shore anglers have been hooking some quality crappie on jigs and live minnows at the Clear Lake State and County Parks and off docks ,” advised Dennis Pfanner at Sacramento Pro Tackle in Sacramento . “ The fish are in the 1 to 2 lb . class . Anglers aren ’ t hooking hundreds of fish , but they are catching decent numbers .”

Billy at Clear Lake Outdoors confirmed the improving crappie bite . “ Some locals showed me photos on their phones of goodsized crappie they landed lately , but they didn ’ t disclose where they hooked them ,” he noted .

He said the largemouth bass fishing continues to be tough , with anglers finding the best action while using drop shot rigs with Robo Worms and shakey heads . Expect the fishing to improve as the fish move into the shallows with the warming weather .

The north end remains best for the bass , and the south end for the crappie .

The channel catfish are holding deep in 30 to 40 feet of water . A nightcrawler is the best bait for cats since the shad are so abundant and the fish are attracted to something that looks different .

Trophy Trout Excite Anglers

OREGON HOUSE - Trout fishing remains the main attraction at Collins Lake as we enter a period of warm and sunny weather .

“ Even with the recent cold weather and rain , we still had some diehard fishermen and women out there trying hard to catch the big one ,” reported Shelly Groce of the Collins Lake Resort . “ We did receive a trophy fish plant last Saturday in the afternoon . The next trophy plant will be the middle of February .”

A derby held by the NorCal Fish Whisperers also produced fair trout action . “ There were over 80 entries and 24 fish caught . Jeremy Monks won the event with his 7-1 / 4 lb . trout while using green Power Eggs .

Danny Myles of Roseville caught a 4 lb . trout in the middle of the lake using worms . Tom and Jenna landed 9 trout trolling with worms in the middle of the lake .

Elaine of Browns Valley bagged a nice trout using orange PowerBait down by the dam . Michelle Garibaldi of Palermo caught a 5 lb . trout by the beach using PowerBait . Mike Hopkins of Auburn landed a quality 6-3 / 4 lb . trout down by the dam using PowerBait .

Calix , Aaliyah and Davinci of Palermo caught some nice-sized trout using PowerBait . Matt and Brittany Smiley caught 5.8 lb . trout trolling in the middle of the lake .

The water level is only 12 feet from full and the surface water temperature is 52 degrees .

More Sturgeon Grab Baits Below Knights Landing

RIO LINDA – The rise in water level from the recent storms should prod more sturgeon to move

3623 up the Sacramento from Verona to Knights Landing , but few anglers are targeting sturgeon now .

You best bet to is to fish with ghost shrimp , pileworms and lamprey eel in the First Beach , Second Beach and El Dorado Bend areas near Knights Landing .

Other anglers are going downriver for their sturgeon . Tim Boggs of Elkhorn Outdoors has been finding solid sturgeon and striped bass action on most of his trips to Suisun Bay , though not on his latest trip there .

“ We caught just one sturgeon , a shaker measuring 34 inches , on ghost shrimp at the Mothball Fleet ,” he explained . “ That ’ s the only fish we saw caught that day . It was hard to fish because the wind was blowing 15 to 25 mph .”

The channel catfish action is slow on the Sacramento River , but should improve as we get more storms to warm up the water . For maximum catfish success , toss out chicken liver and G & S Dip Bait in the Sutter Bypass .

It ’ s Open Water Fishing Time

PORTOLA – Anglers are fishing the open water for rainbow trout at Lake Davis , since the relatively warm weather has resulted in most of the ice that was on the lake melting .

“ I drove the east side of the lake today ,” said Jeanne Graham of J && Grizzly Country Store and Campground Resort . “ All fishing access points up to Lightning Tree are accessible . The Lightning Tree boat ramp has a few small thin ice areas , but you can still launch .”
