of the areas we fished produced doubles before we moved on to find more fish. The rainbows were found in small pods and I expect if we would have worked over some of those areas for a bit longer we would have caught more fish. We easily caught and released three limits of rainbows today, and even a few bass. All our fish were caught trolling Arctic Fox Trolling Flies and small spoons,” tipped Goodwin.
Kirk Portocarrero of SacRiverGuide. Com reports very good bass fishing at Shasta.
“ We’ ve been getting anywhere from 25 to 30 bass per day. Most of the fish are keeper size bass that grab plastic worms. We’ ve picked up some larger fish on spinnerbaits. Our biggest fish of the week was a 6 pound spotted bass that was quickly released,” said Portocarrero.
As of press time, Lake Shasta was 46 feet from maximum pool and rising slightly.
At Whiskeytown Reservoir, the
Paulina Peak Tackle Team have been rounding up consistent limits of kokanee to 16.5 inches.
The fish are holding from 6 to 20 feet deep and are grabbing Micro Catch Hoochies and spinners pulled behind Hammered Big I Dodgers.
If you are interested in some winter sockeye fishing, Whiskeytown is the place!
SMITH / CHETCO RIVERS
Winter Steelhead Fishing Gets Going
SMITH RIVER – The Chetco River is producing the best steelhead fishing at this time, while the Smith is hit and miss.
“ The water conditions are perfect on the Smith – there are just not a ton of fish there,” revealed Phil Desautels of Phil’ s Smiling Salmon Guide Service.
“ Today a lot of guide boats reported 2 to 4 fish on the Chetco,” said Desautels.“ They’ re fishing from Icebox or Loeb down to market with yarn and puff balls with eggs or shrimp.”

Most of the fish are in the 7 to 12 lb. range, with a few bigger fish.
Before the rivers moved into shape, river levels were the highest of the season after the region received some rain.
“ Keep your eye on the weather and plan accordingly,” said Desauels.“ Call me at( 707) 487- 0260.
SOUTHERN OREGON ROUNDUP
Steelheaders Find Mixed Action
ROSEBERG- According to the ODFW, steelhead fishing on the mainstem Umpqua has been hit or miss. There seems to be a few pods of steelhead moving through and the rain should help move them even more. Some anglers are having multiple fish days and others are not catching any.
Winter steelhead is picking on the North Umpqua up with some anglers tying into a few. Most fish are likely still below Winchester Dam, but a few are being caught upstream.

It’ s going to be a great kokanee season at Whiskeytown Reservoir with big fish like this already showing. Gary Coe of Kokanee Power landed this big salmon during a December 30 outing while pulling a Paulina Peak spinner and dodger combo.

In the Tenmile Basin, steelhead anglers have reported catching a couple hatchery steelhead at Spinreel Park on Tenmile Creek. Eel Creek opened to steelhead fishing on Jan. 1.
On the Lower Rogue, a few winter steelhead are being picked up by anglers plunking Spin-n-Glos. Boat anglers are starting to catch more steelhead. Most fish are being caught while boats are anchored up and running plugs waiting for steelhead to move up river. Boat anglers side drifting eggs in the Agness area are also picking up some fish.
Steelhead have been caught in the Galice area recently on the Middle Rogue, but they appear to be holdover halfpounders and not adult winter steelhead. Summer steelhead are available, but cold, clear water is making fishing challenging. Anglers should down-size their tackle and work their offerings slowly along the bottom. The river is also open for trout fishing. Five hatchery trout may be harvested per day. Wild trout must be released unharmed.
The steelhead rivers in the Coquille Basin continue to run low and clear. Steelhead anglers have been plunking in the tidewater sections of the Coquille River near the town of Coquille in hopes of the first returning winter steelhead. Anglers fishing the South Fork Coquille have reported catching winter steelhead. In the Coquille Basin 1 additional hatchery steelhead
