Get Ready for Hot Halibut Fishing!
BERKELEY- Recent halibut and striper catches in the middle and south bay have sent a shock of excitement through the saltwater fishing scene in the East Bay.
Private boaters that have taken exploratory trolling trips have landed both keeper stripers and keeper halibut. Overall the action has been decent for anglers that try, but fishing pressure is extremely light.
Frozen herring and anchovies rigged and trolled behind a 6 or 8 inch Sling Blade is a great option that will produce solid results when you find an area that holds fish.
No big fish have been reported so far, but with so few hooks in the water it’ s hard to judge what the real potential is.
Charter boats have been largely silent. The one exception has been the Bass Tub out of San Francisco that has ventured out and successfully boated both keeper halibut and bass.
With halibut already showing, signs indicate we are on the verge of an outstanding halibut season. Several boats are going to start their halibut seasons in early April. If you’ d like to put some halibut in the freeze, give your favorite skipper a ring, find out when they expect to begin fishing and book a trip!
Sturgeon continues to be very hit and miss in the south bay. Anglers that know how to fish the extreme southern end of the system are scoring some fish on shrimp baits.
Fishing the channel edges in the balance of the south bay can pay off, but without a big number of fish in the south bay, you’ ll do a lot of waiting between hookups.
Shiner perch
Call for CRAB COMBOS! continue to show for shore anglers soaking pile worms and shrimp baits in the south and central parts of the bay.
There are definitely stripers in the system so it’ s not too early to start playing around with swimbaits.
For a shot at some combo action try soaking ghost

CALIFORNIA’ S LONGEST RUNNING OUTDOOR TALK SHOW!
Big boats are really cool. They are long, wide and super stable on the water. But just like your 8 foot salmon rod, boats look a lot bigger and longer at your house where you’ ve got to store them …. Hmmm.
In the past decade or so I’ ve run boats from 12 to 20 plus feet in length. Those experiences have led me to conclude that for all around fishing with a buddy or two boats in the 18 foot class are just about perfect. A boat like that is about the size of your truck. It tows great and you can put it into the garage without a bunch of crazy maneuvering at the end of the day.
On the water 18 footers are big enough to carry multiple people, take on rough water and long runs, but they are small enough to drop into a high sierra trout lake. And isn’ t that what California’ s diverse fishing scene is all about?… Stripers and sturgeon in Suisun Bay this week and trout at Scotts Flat Reservoir next week? An 18 foot boat offers that kind of utility!
Over the years, I’ ve fished aboard quite a few boats made by Rogue Jet. They’ ve all been of the highest quality and mostly really big, like Capt. James Netzel’ s big bad 23 foot Rogue Chinook.
Recently Rogue Jet has offered up the Yukon 185. This is an 18.5 foot boat that offers big boat performance with the benefits of a smaller footprint and of course it’ s a Rogue Jet so it looks good and has the durability of a tank!
The Yukon borrows features from the Coastal series with 36 inch sides, an extended 78-inch-wide bottom and an extra wide 102 inch beam that makes it the biggest, safest and driest riding boat in its class. It comes standard with an offshore

motor bracket with full width platform that extends the bottom of the boat another 32 inches.
The Yukon is a heavy duty all welded aluminum boat that comes with these standard features: full powder coating, walk thru windshield, dual windshield wipers, full instruments, top & side curtains, premium suspension seats with folding arms, rear bench seats with storage and backrests, locking glove box, premium vinyl decking, bow storage, 40 gallon built in fuel tank and much more.
The Yukon package also features a custom Guardian all aluminum trailer as standard equipment. This is one of the strongest, solid and downright beautiful boat trailers on the road. And they weigh 400 to 500 pounds less than conventional trailers. Guardian Trailers are custom made at Rogue Jet right alongside the hull that will be sitting on them! These trailers feature all aluminum construction, with ten ply 15” radial tires, disc brakes, oil bath hubs, LED lighting and more.
The Rogue Jet Yukon 185 has a long list of available features like a rear transom door that opens to the off shore bracket, swing tongue trailer and more.
If you would like to check out a Rogue Jet Yukon in person or learn about any other boat in Rogue’ s epic lineup drop by their booth at the Sacramento Boat Show March 8-11 or the Reno Sport & Boat Show March 16-18. Wouldn’ t a new Rogue Jet Yukon look good out on Pyramid Lake this spring ….?
recommended season alternatives during the March 8-14 PFMC meeting in Rohnert Park, Calif.
Final adoption of ocean salmon season regulations will occur during the April 5-11 PFMC meeting in Portland, Oregon. At press time, it is unclear as to the extent of the restrictions to the upcoming recreational and commercial ocean salmon seasons, but the season is expected to open on April 7th.
Captain Rick Powers of Bodega Bay
Sport Fishing took the 65-foot New Sea Angler south to the Richmond Harbor for regular maintenance prior to the opening of rockfish and salmon seasons, and he said,“ We saw a massive amount of anchovies north of Point Reyes, and I have never seen this before as they are usually south of us, but the anchovies are all the way north to Bodega Bay.”
“ We are looking forward to the April 15th opener for rockfish along with the salmon opener, and we will be running combination trips depending upon the best option for putting fish in the box. In the meantime, a few anglers are picking up rockfish from the jetty along with surf perch from the beaches,” said
