Attract Derby Winning Trout With Dick Nite Dodgers D ibly detailed and effective color patterns. As you would expect, one of the most popular pairings with these dodgers are their classic Dick Nite Spoons in the size No. 2 when after kokanee and trout species. The key to realizing the full potential of this combination is the length of the leader; the con- sensus when using this setup is a leader length of 18-24” which causes a slower, more deliberate swimming action that has proven deadly on kokanee and cold water trout. For more infor- mation about Dick Nite’s full line of tackle, visit them on the web at www. dicknite.com. ick Nite Dodgers are super high quality trolling dodgers that are a hot commodity among trout trolling fishermen. Like any dodger, the Dick Nite Dodgers are utilized ahead of a lure, bug, hoochie or any other kokanee bait in order to add additional action and attraction. When choosing a dodger it’s important to decide how much drag you wish to have it pull and consequently how much action you desire your trailing presentation to have. The Dick Nite versions deliver a moder- ate pull that comes up somewhere in the middle between the subtle pull of a Rocky Mountain Signature Dodger and the deliberate heavy drag of the Christenson’s Dakota Dodger. Trout and kokanee anglers have be- come quite fond of the Dick Nite Dodgers partially due to their straightforward action, but more importantly, the incred- March 30 - April 13, 2018 Money Hoochies I don’t fish many trout and salmon tournaments, but when I do I expect finish in the money and hopefully my partner and I will be contending for the top spot. When the pressure is high and the money is on the line, I don’t “fish” the entire tack- le box like I might during a fun fishing trip. Instead, I fish a few selected baits and lures that have produced large fish for me time and time again. I’m talking about baits like rigged shad and lures like Apexs, Uncle Larry’s Spinners and Speedy Shiners. Over the years, hoochies have become an increasingly important part of my tour- nament fishing arsenal. Hoochies are dead- ly because they are very impressionistic of baitfish. Landlocked salmon and trout mistake them for shad and pond smelt the same way ocean run kings mistake them for anchovies and herring. Most often I run my hoochies behind a 6 inch watermelon color Sling Blade dodger and troll in the 2 to 2.5 mph range. In terms of color I like to start with baitfish hues, before moving on to brighter offer- ings. Glow and UV can make a difference especially in deep water situations. Considering that the market is flooded with hoochie from a myriad of different manufacturers, which hoochies are best? Well I don’t have an answer for that, as the term “best” is highly subjective. Let’s face it, hoochies aren’t the most complex lure in the world and I believe most any hooch- 17 by Cal Kellogg ie will catch fish some of the time. Having said that, my “money hoochies” come from the folks from Silver Horde. When the money is on the line and I’m rigging up with confidence baits you’ll generally find one of my rods armed with either a Silver Horde Micro Squid or an Ace Hi Junior. Micro Squid Micro Squid are perfect for trout, land- locked kings and ‘kokes. The squid are 1.75 inches long. They come in a long list of standard, ultra violet and glow colors. Slip them on a double hook leader, toss a dodger into the mix and you’re ready to fish! Ace Hi Fly “Junior” An Ace Hi Fly is like a h
