Wade has lived an enviable life.
He was born in Long Beach, Calif., and always felt an affinity for the ocean and for nature in general.“ I was always an outdoorsman, just not a good one,” he admits.“ I couldn’ t catch a fish. I couldn’ t shoot a deer.”
After high school he enlisted in the Marine Corps. He recalls the very date – March 5, 1966 – that he stepped off a plane in Da Nang as U. S. involvement in the Vietnam War was reaching its peak.
After three years as a Marine, Wade returned to civilian life, starting college at Long Beach City College and eventually earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminology at Long Beach State. One of his assignments was to interview three people working in law enforcement. The interview with Office Warden Gerry Irwin of the Dept. of Fish & Game changed Wade’ s life. He took the exam to become a warden and was hired in 1976.
Assigned to patrol the rough-and-tumble San Pedro waterfront, Wade used his job to improve his outdoor skills. As long as he covered the basics of bag limits, size limits, and season closures, he was in a position to say,“ Nice lingcod. Catch it on bait?” And so he learned.
His most memorable fishing trip, he says, was a three-day trip out of San Diego in the 1990s. He and 25 friends chartered the American Angler to fish San Martin Island in Mexico, catching albacore, yellowtail, even a few dorado.“ We
FISH AND GAME WARDEN RETIRES TO RUN CHARTER BOAT
When the offshore fishing season reopens in Bodega Bay in April, Captain Mike Wade will resume running the 31- foot charter boat Take 5. He wants to cut back on his number of absolutely plugged the boat,” he remembers with a smile. They have made the trip several times, but that one time was magical.

“ It was a job of substance,” he says.“ I always felt I was doing it for the right reason, protecting the resource for California and the USA.” One year he was voted DFG’ s Supervisor of the Year. He retired from the DFG in 2004.
Take 5 will run out of Bodega Bay 4-5 days a week April through December. Wade says his passengers can expect safety first and a real fun time“ and hopefully we’ ll get fish.”
They will fish halibut, salmon, white seabass, lingcod, albacore tuna, and
rockfish, depending on the season. Whale-watching, bird-watching and Fleet Week Air Show cruises are also options.
Two other captains share the skippering schedule: North Bay Charters owner Captain Eric Holthouse and Captain Josh Stevens.
