BERKELEY
Charter Boat Season Is Officially Underway In Bay Area
BERKELEY- It’ s official, charter boats are coming out of hibernation and halibut are going into frying pans!
The Bass Tub was the first of Bay Area charter boat to hit the S. F. Bay halibut grounds and they trolled up success on both keeper halibut and keeper stripers.
Berkeley’ s California Dawn kicked off their season on March 17 with Captain James Smith at the wheel.
“ Our day started off pretty slow trolling around trying to zero in on some fish,” said Captain James Smith.“ In the afternoon, we’ d found some halibut. My 15 anglers ended up landing 15 shaker halibut and 4 keepers. I’ m expecting pretty much steady improvement in both the bass and halibut fishing as the tides and conditions improve.”
Sturgeon reports have been pretty slim overall from the South Bay, but locals that know the extreme southern end of the system are hooking a few fish on shrimp and eel baits.
Shiner perch fishing is fair for shore anglers in the South and Central Bay. Typically, the last hour of the incoming tide through the first hour of the outgo is the most productive time. Shrimp baits and pile worms are good choices fishing on either a sliding sinker rig or a Hi-Lo rig.
the ocean salmon season, leaving the April 15 rockfish opener in local waters as the best hope for the upcoming spring and summer seasons. Normally, the ocean salmon opener will bring hundreds of vacationers to the Sonoma coast, filling up campgrounds and bringing hope for local businesses.
The three options for the recreational ocean salmon season will be during the April 5-11 PFMC meeting in Portland, Ore. The PFMC is considering alternatives for California’ s 2018 commercial and recreational ocean salmon regulations, including season dates and size limits.
The public is encouraged to comment at a hearing on Tuesday, March 27 at 7 p. m., at the Laurel Inn and Conference Center, 801 West Laurel Drive in Salinas. Comments can also be submitted through the PFMC website at www. pcouncil. org.
Out of Lawson’ s Landing, Willie Vogler send in a sample of four clams to the California Department of Public Health this week, and the results were dire at seven times higher than the warning levels for the PST toxin.
There are some Dungeness crab inside of Tomales Bay, and private boaters are picking up a few legal crab to 6 inches. Surf perch action from the beaches remains decent for red tail perch with sand crabs or Berkley Camo Worms.

Rockfish Season Opens April 15, Salmon Opener Postponed
BODEGA BAY- The Sonoma County coast received a doublewhammy this week with the postponement of the opening of the recreational ocean salmon season and the closure of recreationally harvested mussels, clams, or whole scallops due to dangerous levels of paralytic shellfish poisoning( PST).
The good news is that the rockfish season in local waters will open on April 15. The New Sea Angler, skippered by Rick Powers out of the Bodega Bay Sportfishing Center, will pursuing rockfish and lingcod starting on opening day.
