BAJA ROUNDUP

40 March 30- April 13, 2018 VOL. 37 • ISS. 08

W e really can’ t ask for any better weather than we had for the last couple weeks,” reported Captain Jerry Chapman of JC Sportfishing. The sun just continues to shine about every day. We have had a couple overcast days but nothing major. Highs around the mid to ladder 80’ s and lows in the mid to lower 60’ s. Everyone knows why so many people do come to Cabo and it’ s the near perfect weather year round. We do get some hotter months in July, August and September but during those months, all the fishing and water sports here, are really good.”

“ The marlin fishing started on Monday really good at the 1150 but started to taper off as soon as Tuesday. Then throughout the week the marlin have been hit and miss with some good days and

Bubba Gets Fished( Part of a series of what I use and why I use it)

Bubba, my delta fishing buddy, was complaining to me the other day that fishing takes up too much time. Living in San Mateo County, he said he had to get up early, drive all the way to the delta, launch the boat, fish all day, then drive the boat back home and wash it down. He asked,“ Isn’ t there something easier to fish?”

Now, Bubba( whose real name is Dan) is a die-hard largemouth bass fisherman in the delta. I, too, like fishing the delta chasing those green fish, but I like fishing a lot more than to target one specific species; so I asked Bubba if he had, say, four hours to fish sometime. He said he would be up for it.
The day came when we launched his Tracker bass boat from one of the local harbors in Marin county and we headed out to some close by pilings.“ Here,” I said,“ try this outfit.”
The outfit consisted of a Cousins brand RAZE series 7’ light spinning rod, coupled with a Daiwa BG 2500 reel loaded with 8 lb. test P-Line CX Premium line. On the business end, I tied on two # 6 VMC Sureset drop shot hooks using dropper loops, 9” apart, and slipped on a 1 / 2 oz. cylindrical drop shot weight 6” below the lower hook. Baited with small pieces of prawns, it was intended we fished these rigs drop shot style.
The first two sets of pilings delivered zero action, but the third was infested with nice 11”-13” perch of

bad days. Striped marlin fishing has been pretty average this week from the 1150 spot up to the San Jamie Banks and most fish being landed on ballyhoo along with pitching live bait, with a few on lures. Striped marlin has been decent all week on the Pacific and the Sea of Cortez side both,” Chapman advised.
“ A few tuna around our boats have been doing just so so on the tuna. There hasn’ t been any porpoise running with the fish so we had to look for them with electronics we have on our own Bob Marlin and this paid off big time. We had managed to just spot a few birds circling and we went in that direction and was able to pick up a school via electronics and we followed them for a while and started landing quite a few in the 15lb to 25lbs range,” said Chapman.
various species. Bubba was surprised at how hard the perch pulled, much harder than crappie or bluegills.
Then the action stopped as if a switch was turned off. I looked at my phone and knew why. The incoming tide had reached slack and the current was no longer moving.
We moved over to a cove, anchored, and shared some cold beverages while waiting for the tide to turn. When the water started to pull away, we headed out towards the shoreline where piles of rocks protected the shoreline.
I told Bubba that the idea was to cast his rig towards the shoreline, as close to the rocks but not into them. After snagging up a couple of times, Bubba got the hang of it.
About 50 yds. from where we started, Bubba set the hook on something that not only bent the rod hard, but stripped out line on a light drag. At the end of an exciting and spirited tussle, he boated what turned out to be a big 15” jack smelt.“ I can’ t believe how fast and how strong this thing is!” he said with a grin.
An hour later and having landed and released maybe 20 of these hard fighting silver streaks, the action stopped and we headed home.
We fished for 3.5 hours and had a great time, right in our back yard.
NEXT TIME: Reasons for what we used and why. Does it make a difference?
“ Inshore fishing has been really good. It’ s been all about triggerfish, grouper, snappers and pompano as this has been the inshore story over the past week. Lots of triggers being landed and there pretty good to eat if you fry them up. Just dip them in flour and fry in olive oil and they come out pretty tasty. Good numbers of sierra being landed just about
