QUARRY LAKES
Rainbow Plants Keep Action Going
FREMONT – Regular trout plants continue to keep anglers busy at Horseshoe Lake, located in the Quarry Lakes Recreation Area. Anglers are hooking rainbows while using tossing out PowerBait, nightcrawlers, spoons and spinners at Horseshoe.
The latest CDFW plant featured 1000 pounds of catchable rainbows, while the most recent park district plant featured 1000 pounds of catchable rainbows.
For example, nine-year old Kingston Reloba of San Jose caught a beautiful five-pound trout. He was fishing along Fishermen’ s Row with PowerBait. Joaquin Gutierrez also caught his limit of rainbows in at the Cove while using spoon, reported Joe Sullivan of the East Bay Regional Park District.
If the kiosk is closed, please use the yellow Ventek machine to pay for parking( exact change only, please). For fishing permits, you may use either the Ventek machine or the blue iron ranger posts across from the kiosk, from the entrance from the Isherwood Staging Area, and from the walk-through gates by the Sequoia Bridge and from the Niles gate. PLEASE REMEMBER THAT YOU MUST BE 100 FEET AWAY FROM THE FISH TUBE, THE BOAT DOCK, AND THE BEACH AREA while fishing from the shore and from a boat. Also, note that the use of lead fishing tackle is prohibited at Quarry Lakes. You can exchange lead tackle at the kiosk in a“ 1 for 1” trade for stainless steel weights.

REDDING / RED BLUFF
Big Rains Muddy Water
RED BLUFF- As of press time trout fishing on the Sacramento River between Redding and Red Bluff was basically shut down. Several days of heavy rain created big discharges from tributary creeks and those inflows have left the Sacramento River muddy and speckled with debris.
Prior to the rain, fishing for wild rainbows

was very good and will likely rebound quickly once the weather stabilizes and the water clears.
Over the past few weeks, anglers have been hooking from a dozen to more than two dozen trout per day. Those numbers will likely pump up even more with the addition of some warm spring days.
If you’ ve never fished the Sacramento for wild‘ bows, make this the spring when you do it!
Fly fishing is a great approach on the river and so is fishing with spinning gear armed with things like plugs, roe and beads.
There are several guides that routinely fish the river for spring rainbows. Mike Bogue of Mike Bogue’ s Guide Service and Robert Weese of Northern California Guide Service are two of the best. To contact Weese, call( 530) 755-7196. To reach Mike Bogue, dial( 530) 246-8457.

RIO VISTA
Live Bait Striper Bite Picks Up
RIO VISTA- Anglers on the troll found scattered debris while others made use of live bait to find striped bass.
The live bait bite kicked up a notch this week, according to the pro anglers at Fisherman’ s Warehouse in Sacramento.
“ Top of the incoming is best for drifting live minnows along the shoals on the San Joaquin River,” said Craig Kamikawa, assistant manager.““ While the water is stained with lots of logs over on the Sacramento, the San Joaquin is only a tad bit stained and the fish don’ t seem to mind too much. A lot of the fish are in the three to six pound range.”
“ Guys trolling on the Sacramento are just having a tough time with all the witches hair and floating logs. You’ ll have your baits out and floating from all the weeds after a few minutes of trolling,” Kamikawa related.
Sturgeon fishing remained quiet, despite the influx of rain.
“ There’ s guys either going down to Pittsburg or up to Cache. The guys up in Cache are marking a few and catching a few, but the better fishing is down below in Pittsburg. Roe and eel are best for bait.”- Roland Aspiras

3623 fallen in the foothills. On top of that, the rain was warm and it melted a significant portion of the middle elevation snow pack creating a huge amount of run off.
“ I went up to Rollins this week,” reported Fish Sniffer editor Cal Kellogg.“ We had a lot of rain and I wanted to check out the conditions at a few different lakes. The parts of Rollins that I saw were pretty murky and there was nobody fishing. I think it will be several days at a minimum until the lake gets back into fishing shape.”
“ I saw the same thing at Halsey Forebay. There are trout in the lake waiting to be caught, but all I saw was lots of muddy water and zero anglers,” said Kellogg.
Prior to the most recent series of soaking foothills storms, Rollins was kicking out small to medium size spotted bass on standard soft plastics. Halsey was booting out limits and near limits of rainbows and there were planter rainbows up for grabs at Scotts too.
Trollers are picking up planter rainbows at Scotts Flat Lake while top lining with spoons and nightcrawlers behind dodgers, reported Craig Newton at Willfish Bait and Tackle.
When the lake works into spring shape, some sleeper bonus browns available as well as some dandy smallmouths and northern strain largemouths.
