Macks, Browns & Occasional
Rainbows Reward High Sierra
Anglers
SOUTH LAKE TAHOE - If you would like
to land some mackinaw and have a shot
at hooking a jumbo brown or a beautiful
rainbow, now is the time to hit Lake Tahoe.
“My friends Jimmy Ness, Ray Garcia
and I took our kayaks up to Tahoe and
had a fantastic tip jigging and trolling for
mackinaw and trout. We launched at Cave
Rock and stayed within a mile of the ramp,”
said Steve Wong.
“We got 9 mackinaw to 11 pounds while
jigging Duh! Spoons. We also landed a
couple mackinaw while trolling count down
Rapalas along with a 21 inch brown and a
19 inch rainbow. The rainbow was so silver
that it looked like a salmon,” exclaimed
Wong.
The team at Tahoe Sportfishing have
been putting their clients on productive
mackinaw action at the lake’s south end.
Minnows teamed with flashers have been
working well when trolled from 100 to 200
feet deep. The average mack is going 3 to
6 pounds and there have been larger fish
up to and beyond 10 pounds caught.
Mickey Daniels of Mickey’s Big Mack
Charters has also been enjoying solid mack
success on fish up to 8 pounds. Mickey has
been working the northern end of the lake
with a variety of different offerings.
The folks at Mountain Hardware are
reporting that the boat launch is open at
Donner Lake. Mack fishing for those who
fish off the boat is good. Macks can be
found at depth of 18-75 feet and most
concentrations of these fish can be found
around ledges and drop-offs.
Macks that are closer to the shore right
now are ranging from 2-5 pounds mostly
and have been hitting small spoons such
as Kastmasters, Krocodiles and larger
spinners.
TRINITY LAKE/RIVER
Time to Target Bass, Trout
WEAVERVILLE – Both the black bass
and rainbow trout bites should be heating
up on Trinity Lake with the warming
weather.
“Trinity Lake is 40’ from full pool and
its looking like it’s in great shape for the
2018 season,” said Jeff Goodwin of Jeff
Goodwin’s Guide Service. “Bass anglers
are already hooking smallmouth and
largemouth bass all over the lake. The
trout bite has been good and the rainbows
should be headed for the creek mouths any
time before running up to spawn.”
“The kokanee and king salmon fishing
should be quite good again this year, and
don’t forget, CDFW increased salmon limits
to 10 salmon per angler, per day. The
possession limit is 20 salmon! That’s a lot
of fish for the bbq or the smoker if that’s
your taste,” he added.
Fishing pressure has been very light
on both Trinity Lake and the Trinity River,
according to Tim Brady of Brady’s Sporting
Goods.
Trinity Lake is holding 1,832,426 acre
feet of water, 75 percent of capacity and 96
percent of the 10-year-average.
