Trout And Bass Bite Despite
Stained Water
COLFAX - After a week that included
more than 5 inches of rain in the foothills,
Rollins Reservoir, Scotts Flat Reservoir
and Halsey Forebay are all stained, but
they are all producing fish despite the water
conditions.
“I caught and released 11 rainbows and 2
spotted bass while working from my kayak
both inside and outside Long Ravine Cove
at Rollins Lake,” reported Jason Pleece
of Meadow Vista. “The rainbows were
standard planters that measured from 10 to
15 inches long. All the trout and bass came
on a UV green Sling Blade trailing a Gulp!
Crawler.”
Otto Clark and his son Gil hit Scotts Flat
last week hoping for brown trout.
“We trolled Rapalas for 5 hours in the
rain,” Otto related. “We were hoping to
get one of the lake’s browns, but we didn’t
hook a single trout. Instead we got two
smallmouth bass that weighed just a little
under 3 pounds each. Both of the bass
came on a large broken back silver and
black Rapala floater.”
There have been a few reports of shore
anglers catching the occasional rainbow
while soaking dough bait near the marina at
Scotts Flat.
At Halsey Forebay fishing pressure is
light, but the rainbows that were planted
toward the end of March are still biting.
Salmon eggs, Power Eggs and PowerBait
will all tempt the Forebay’s rainbows.

SACRAMENTO AREA
Stripers Convene for Spring
Session
SACRAMENTO – In spite of high flows,
shore anglers are battling big numbers of
striped bass on the Sacramento River in
the metropolitan area.
Just ask Carter Cruickshank of
Sacramento, who went bank fishing on the
Sacramento at Bryte Beach on the other
side of Discovery Park on Friday.

visited Folsom Lake on April 10, including these bass.

“My friend, Trent Harney, and I caught
our limits of keeper stripers while fishing
pileworms in just 1-1/2 hours of fishing,”
said Cruickshank. “His two fish measured
22 and 24 inches long, while mine were 19
to 21 inches long.”
“The fish are showing at all of the
usual locations, including Miller Park,
Garcia Bend and Discovery Park,” said
Cruickshank. “The key is to fish just 15 feet
from shore in the high water.”
Fishing is also really good in the stretch
below Verona to Elkhorn, according to Tim
Boggs at Elkhorn Outdoors in Rio Linda.
“The water is high, but the fish are
biting,” said Boggs. “Trollers are hooking
the fish on P-Line Angry Eye lures in red
and white. Bait fishermen also hooking
fish on sardines and pileworms from boat
and shore. Most of the fish are in the 3 to
6-pound range, with a few larger fish to 12
pounds.”
