Brought To You By VOL.37 • ISS. 11 BASS ANGLER NEWS! Tasmanian Devils For Stripers & Black Bass? T he Tasmanian Devil is a very unique lure that is best known here on the West Coast for it’s ability to hook trout, but the fact of the matter is that the Tas- manian Devil will hook just about any predatory gamefish that forages on small to medium size baitfish. Here in California, Delta stripers, spot- ted bass, largemouth bass and smallmouth bass spend a lot of their time pursuing threadfin shad that range from 2 to 4 inches long. Anglers have just started to realize that the Tasmanian Devil in its larger sizes is just about ideal for imitating threadfin shad. If you’ve never seen a Tasmanian Devil, the lure consists of a hollow weighted torpedo shaped central core surrounded with plastic including curved wings out each side. The result is a shad shaped lure that has a unique dancing, fluttering action when trolled or retrieved. Some anglers have been using the Tas- manian Devil while plugging, while others have been enjoying success while trolling the bait. For trolling water 8 to 9 feet deep anglers are adding a small 1 to 1.5 ounce 15 Ultimate Frog Challenge Comes Back To California Delta This July! A trolling weight about 48 inches above the lures to get it into the strike zone. Tasmanian Devils are very aerodynamic so they cast easily. On the retrieve, impart- ing a few twitches of the rod tip causes the lure to dip, dive and act generally wound- ed. This is the kind of abrupt movement that triggers strikes. Some guys are experimenting and tip- ping their Tasmanian Devils with bucktail adorned hooks while others are using super glue to attach white or chartreuse swimtail grubs to the bait’s hook. These additions give the bait a larger profile and cause the lure to put off additional vibra- tion when pulled through the water. The next time you’re in the market for bass lures, give a large white or chartreuse Tasmanian Devil Lure a try. You’ll likely love the results. -www.tasmaniandevil- lures.net. May 11 - 22, 2018 ll the planning, talking, and waiting is over…and now it’s time to get down to it. The 2018 UFC – Ultimate Frog Chal- lenge presented by Gone Fishin Marine event is finally here as the west’s legion of frog fishing enthusiasts stand back to see just which top water frog brand the California delta’s huge population of bass prefer, and who will carry home the moniker of “Frog Master” on what is arguably the most prolific bass fish- ery in the United States. Last year, the Rossettis captured the title as well as the special “Top Frog” award for the River2Sea brand, win- ning the event’s “Royal Rumble” (an event within the regular event, where each brand was represented by one team). But the question remains to be an- swered as to wheth- er these former winners will turn in another command performance, and solidify their place in the minds of their peers as new and true “Frog masters” of the delta. This year’s event will take place on July 28th and 30th going out of Russo’ Marina on Bethel Island, with a 1st day blast-off time of 11am, and a 2nd day launch time of 6am, where participating teams will have the opportunity to fish with ANY BRAND of top water frog - THEY CHOOSE!
