Trips to Lopez Point, Big Sur
Deliver Hefty Rockfish and
Lingcod
MOSS LANDING – Anglers are finding
outstanding fishing for large rockfish and
lingcod aboard the Kahuna on the fishable
days off Point Sur and Lopez Point.
On May 23, the 19 anglers aboard the
Kahuna made the first trip of the season
down the coast to Lopez Point., coming
back with limits of both lingcod and rockfish.
They landed 38 lingcod, 2 cabezon,
20 canary rockfish, 21 copper rockfish,
71 vermilion rockfish and 71 assorted
rockfish, reported Carol Jones of Kahuna
Sportfishing.
Then on May 27, the 19 anglers aboard
the boat bagged 13 lingcod, 41 canary
rockfish, 52 copper rockfish, 65 vermilion
rockfish and 82 assorted rockfish on trip
to Point Sur. “Most of the anglers this day
were fishing with shrimp flies, baited with
squid strips,” said Jones.
On May 28, the 17 anglers on the
Kahuna bagged 34 lingcod,19 canary

rockfish, 39 copper rockfish, 34 lingcod,
61 rockfish and 51 vermilion rockfish. The
anglers fished with bars and shrimp flies,
again at Point Sur.
The anglers boarding boats out of Chris’
Fishing Trips in Monterey also reported
rockfish and lingcod success on May 27.
The 25 anglers aboard the Checkmate
landed 38 lingcod and limits of rockfish,
while the 24 anglers on the Caroline
bagged 24 lingcod and limits of rockcod.
“The inshore fishing was the best bet
today,” reported Todd Fraser of Bayside
Marine in Santa Cruz on May 27. “There
were some nice lingcod and rockfish caught
on the west side of Santa Cruz and near
Franklin Point.”
“The halibut are still being landed in the
shallow water near the wharves and New
Brighton State Beach,” said Fraser. “The
weather was calm all morning. I did not
hear of any salmon caught today, but there
were a few people seeing bait at Mulligan’s.
There are a bunch of salmon down at
Morro Bay, so hopefully they will be up here
soon.”

Perch are also being landed by anglers
using sand crabs, grass shrimp and pile
worms.
Jack smelt are beginning to show up
more often, with some being landed both
in the surf, and on the Vaness Street PIer
by anglers using Sabiki rigs and small
kastmasters, according to Scott.

SAN FRANCISCO - Striped bass
continue to be landed by anglers fishing on
city beaches, perch remains on tap, and
halibut continue to be landed inside the bay.
“Catch me a halibut, or two,” joked
Stefanie Scott at Gus’ Discount Bait and
Tackle in San Francisco, when asked about
halibut fishing inside
the bay.
“It’s not hot, but
they’re catching
a couple at the
beginning and end
of the incoming tide!
Try casting swimbaits
and rat-l-traps,” she
tipped.
