Striper Fishermen Scarce as Wind Pounds Deltan

RIO VISTA- Angling pressure dwindled as wind pounded the Delta, despite the availability of striped bass on the Sacramento River.

Most anglers were completely bypassing the Delta this week and going to the bay, according to Alan Fong, manager at Fisherman’ s Warehouse in Sacramento.

“ When the wind dies down you can find a couple either trolling or plugging,” he related.

Among those having success was Tom Amberson, with one of his crew members finding a nice double digit fish willing to take a Delta Wood Bomber plug.

Can Nguyen, owner and operator of the Master Baiter in Isleton noted some large schoolie-sized fish were available on the troll on the Old Sacramento River.

Bass Blitz Baits, Trout on Tap Too!

COLFAX“ I’ m impressed. I’ m seeing the best fishing I’ ve seen at Rollins in a very long time. In fact, bass fishing has never been better at least not for the 20 plus years I’ ve been fishing the lake,” reported Jason Pleece of Meadow Vista.

“ For a long time, a big bass up at Rollins was a 12 inch smallmouth and once in a great while someone would hook a decent 3 to 5 pound largemouth. Once spotted bass got into the lake things started changing. These days I’ m getting more spots than smallmouths and I’ m getting one or more 2 to 3 pound bass on almost every trip,” said Pleece.

“ On my last trip, I got 11 fish in about 3 hours fishing from my kayak. I got them up top on a Yo-Zuri Banana Boat and used a Shad Rap for shallow cranking. The fish are post spawn and spread out, so you

never know when or where the next strike will come. My top fish last night was a 2.07 pound spot,” related Pleece.

“ I haven’ t been trout fishing at Rollins for a couple weeks, but my buddy Ryan and his dad did pretty good trolling. They got a total of 7 planted rainbows in the Bear River Arm while puling flashers and worms on 3 to 5 colors of lead core,” disclosed Pleece.

Over at Scotts Flat there is good reaction bait bass action at times on poppers and rip baits for smallmouths to 3 pounds and northern largemouths to 4.

When the hard baits aren’ t performing a Ned Rig or a 4 inch wacky Senko will get bites.

Trout reports are few and far between for Scotts. Bank fishing is thought to be slow, but trollers had been finding action at the mouth of the river with standard spoons such as Needlefish.

Catfish action should be kicking into gear soon at Scotts with baits like liver, hot dog slices and night crawlers.

Catfish Bite Picks Up With Warm Weather

SACRAMENTO – Striped bass fishing in the Sacramento River in the metropolitan area is winding down, although anglers are still picking up some schoolie-sized fish from Freeport all of the way to Verona.

“ Anglers are hooking most of the stripers on blood and pileworms,” reported Dennis Pfanner at Sacramento Pro Tackle.“ However, anglers are beginning the target catfish locally with the arrival of the hot summer weather.”

Local anglers are hooking catfish while soaking chicken liver, sardines and mackerel in the Port of Sacramento. The Sutter Bypass off O’ Bannion Road is another good place to target channel catfish in the 1 to 8 lb. class with the same baits. The best fishing can be found at night

“ You can also try targeting crappie and bluegill with minnows under bobbers in the bypass,” added Pfanner.

Shad action has slowed down on the Sacramento at Discovery Park and Miller Park, with the top fishing reported now in the upper section of the American River.

Other local anglers are focusing on bass fishing in the Delta. Alan Fong at Fisherman’ s Warehouse in Sacramento reported top-notch top water action for largemouth bass on his most recent trip on the Delta.

“ We caught and released good numbers of bass while throwing top water lures, including Whopper Poppers and plastic frogs, on the upper section of the Mokelumne River,” said Fong.“ We hooked and released a lot of fish in the 1-1 / 2 to 2-1 / 2 lb. range, along with 3 good-sized fish weighing up to 8 pounds.”

Pablo Reservoir.

“ We bought the last of the Mt Lassen catfish- they are no longer producing them,” said Marcella Shoemaker of the Rocky Mountain Recreation Company.“ We were expecting between 7,000 and 8,000 lbs., but we ended up with 5,517 lbs.”

Consequently, catfish have the most dominant fish in the catches lately. Mario Novoa of Rodeo landed a 7 lb. catfish using anchovies at the boat launch. Patricia Ryan of San Pablo caught a catfish weighing over 13 lbs. on night crawlers at the boat launch.
