Red Hot Halibut & Bass Action On Tap Inside S . F . Bay

BERKELEY - Live bait potluck fishing inside San Francisco Bay has been fantastic for both striped bass and halibut . Most of the stripers have been schoolies that range up to about 10 pounds . On the halibut front some huge fish from 20 to 45 pounds have been showing up regularly .

“ We ’ ve had a lot of good days on the water this year , but one of the best so far was yesterday . Not only did we get big numbers of fish , we also got some of the biggest halibut of the season to this point ,” reported Captain James Smith of California Dawn Sportfishing . “ When all was said and done we had 23 halibut to 26 pounds and 31 stripers to 10 pounds for our 19 anglers . That averages out to almost 3 keeper fish per rod .”

Things have been going equally as good on the Happy Hooker .

“ The fishing is really good inside the bay right now ,” exclaimed Captain Chris Smith . “ On our last trip , we had 17 halibut and 27 bass for our 18 anglers .”

Captain Hayden Mullins of Dragon Sportfishing has been putting his 6 pack anglers on outstanding action inside the bay .

“ We are getting fish every day . Some days it ’ s limits and other days we are just under limits . There are some very nice fish around . The halibut action has been really exciting . People love catching them and they are great to eat ,” said Hayden .

The crew of the New Easy Rider are among the very best in the business when it comes to hammering salmon , but when salmon aren ’ t available they are pretty darn good at rounding up bass and halibut too .

On their last trip Captains Joe and Joey Gallia put their 21 anglers on 15 halibut to 24 pounds and added 20 stripers .

Captain Quang Vo of Goldeneye 2000 Sportfishing has been posting some outstanding bass and halibut scores . On his last trip , Capt . Quang ’ s 28 anglers boated a mixed bag of halibut and bass that totaled 69 keeper fish to 19 pounds !

Salmon Season Opens June 17

BODEGA BAY - The salmon season from Horse Mountain in Humboldt County south to Pigeon Point opens on June 17 , and the is optimism for the opening day .

Captain Rick Powers of the New Sea Angler and Bodega Bay Sport Fishing said , “ We have been taking light loads a few times per week , and rockfishing has been fantastic . On our last trip , the anglers got off the boat with 50 to 60-pound sacks of rockfish along with a limit of Dungeness crab to

2.5 pounds . One angler put in a limit consisting of 8 big coppers and 2 vermilions . Of the 15 limits of rockfish on this trip , there were only 3 school fish with two yellows and a blue as the rest were coppers , vermilions , Chinas , Bolinas , and quillbacks to go with 16 lings to 15 pounds .

“ The lingcod counts have been great when the conditions allow , and we have landed up to 42 lings on a single trip with one fishermen boating 14 lings on an orange / green swimbait . We will have a few weeks of crab season left as it ends on June 30 ,” he said .

Powers added , “ I have something brewing up here that I am not ready to announce just yet , but I believe this fishery will be a big hit . After starting the crab combination trips and the Humboldt squid ventures , I am always thinking of new ways to get people out to have a great time . This has been the slowest spring for fishing interest in several years , and I don ’ t understand since the rockfishing has been so good .
