LAKE DON PEDRO cont.
8:30 a. m. The action was just as good on Friday, and the fish are fat and healthy. They are loaded with small shad and even grasshoppers, and there have been a number of fish working the surface.”
“ We have even caught and released a number of spotted bass, and green has been the color for both trout and bass, perhaps due to the fish loading up on the small grasshoppers. We have been running ExCel spoons behind a Sling Blade at 30 to 50 feet on the downrigger. We landed a few small 2nd- year kokanee this week, and we are releasing these fish to grow larger for next year,” stated Smith.
John Liechty of Xperience Fishing Guide Service took a trip to Pedro this week, and he found a five-fish limit around 15 pounds working plastics on a shakey-head off of long tapered lake points or offshore structure at depths from 20 to 30 feet. He said,“ We came out in the afternoon at 3:00 p. m., and we started finesse fishing before throwing jerkbaits, also with success.”
Don Pedro is also kicking out crappie, and Merritt Gilbert of Valley Rod and Gun in Clovis said,“ We have a number of our Fresno-area crappie fishermen heading north to Pedro with Mr. Crappie, Panfish Stingers, Lunker City’ s Finnish Fish, or Gulp! Alive Minnows. We must have sold 100 jars of the Gulp! Alive this week.”
Boaters are cautioned to watch for unmarked hazards and floating debris. The lake dropped from 94 to 93 percent.

EAGLE LAKE
Hard Working Trollers Nail High Flying Rainbows
SPAULDING- Long time Fish Sniffer supporter Raymond Gould Jr. reported“ solid fishing” at Eagle Lake for anglers willing to put in the time.
“ The early season action at Eagle Lake has changed in recent years,” asserts Gould.“ Catching rainbows up there in the spring was like shooting fish in a barrel and anglers got used to that easy action. These days there are just as many fish as ever in Eagle, but the amount of bait available to them has exploded. Fish that have plenty to eat are more challenging to catch than fish that are hungry, but if you work at it you can absolutely limit out on quality rainbows at Eagle.”
“ I spent three days up there last week fishing from my Klamath skiff. I got limits on two of the three days. The hottest set up for me was a brass and orange Cripplure trolled at 2 miles per hour 15 feet deep. I also got hit on threaded worms and trolling flies,” said Gould.
“ The best area for me was offshore of Black Mountain. I tried the Ronald McDonald area and Miner’ s Point, but those areas were slow and the water was really off color. The best water quality I found was off Black Mountain and I think that had a lot to do with the good fishing I found there. To hook up it takes persistence. I had a number of short strikes throughout my stay and that almost always means that the trout are not very hungry. I didn’ t fish in the morning. Instead I did my fishing in the late afternoon and evening. The evening bite is just as good as the morning bite at Eagle, but there is very little fishing pressure in the evening,” Gould asserted.
“ The quality of the rainbows was fine. My biggest fish went 3.4 pounds and the smallest was just over 2. The fish were hot and put up a good fight. My biggest trout actually jumped and tossed the hook beside the boat as I scooped it into the net,”

hot weather and good smallie bite kept them from finishing the second half of the combination trip, but they caught and released from 10 to 15 legal smallmouth to 15 inches working the rocks in the north Delta sloughs.
He said,” It got too hot to continue fishing for stripers, but I know that there are still plenty of fish left in the system, and I will be back out next week to find them.”
Dan Mathisen of Dan’ s Delta Outdoors in Oakley reported a good largemouth bass bite with buzzbaits in the evenings along with frogs, wakebaits, and punching the weeds with Creature Baits.
He said,“ It was blowing a bit on Thursday, but nothing like it has been over the past few weeks. I went fly fishing in the afternoon for 10 bass, and the frog bite is heating up with Pro Z frogs in Sccoobee Doo or Smoke. The Scoobee Doo is like a sparrow while the Smoke is black. I haven’ t been fishing for stripers, but we marked them in the Middle River.” His next team tournament is June 30th out of Russo’ s Marina.

EASTERN SIERRA
Trouters Prosper At Bridgeport Area Waters
BRIDGEPORT-“ The flows are back down to 282 cfs on the East Walker River right now. We’ ve been getting some mixed reports from down there with some anglers not having much luck but others doing very well,” reported Jim Reid of Ken’ s Sporting Goods.
“ The anglers who are doing well are mostly nymphing with small midge and caddis patterns and there has also been some decent streamer action. With the flow at 282 the river is definitely easier to fish than when it’ s over 500 but you still need to get your bugs down very near the bottom
