For holdover rainbow trout from the heavy Mt. Lassen Hatchery plants during the fall / spring months, Robbie Dunham of Koke Machine Guide Service put in 9 Lassen rainbows and a bonus 4.8-pound German brown running Speedy Shiners in the main river channel near the dam at depths to 60 feet.
He said,“ I didn’ t know how it would turn out as I haven’ t been on the lake in a week along with the full moon, but we put in our 10 by noon along with releasing two bass at 4.9 and 3.6 pounds.” The lake dropped from 93 to 91 percent.

PIONEER – The El Dorado Irrigation District stocked 1200 pounds of rainbows in the 3 to 9 lb. range, boosting catches over the July Fourth Holiday weekend.
“ Fishing has been very good for both shore and boat anglers,” reported Joe Voss at the Caples Lake Resort.“ Trollers are using lures and nightcrawlers behind flashers and dodgers, while shore anglers are tossing out PowerBait, nightcrawlers and Kastmasters.”
Paul Kneeland, Fish Sniffer Publisher, and John Brassfield, owner of Trucksmart, reported excellent fishing during two days of trolling at Caples.
“ I landed a 5-1 / 2 lb. brown while trolling with an Uncle Larry’ s Spinner behind a dodger at 10 feet deep,” stated Kneeland.“ We also landed two mackinaw weighing 3 and 1-1 / 2 pounds while using Flatfish at 10 to 15 feet deep. We also caught around two dozen rainbows. We released all of the fish we hooked both days.
“ Most of the rainbows hit nightcrawlers behind flashers at the mouth of the creeks, including Emigrant Creek,” said Kneeland.
Emigrant and Winnemucca lakes, both high mountain hike in waters, are producing good numbers of 8 to 9 inch brook trout for fishermen tossing out lures and flies, noted Voss.
Stephanie Spears at the Bear River Lake Resort reported tough fishing for shore and boat anglers over the July Fourth weekend. She said the lake hasn’ t been planted with rainbows since June.

CLEARLAKE – Largemouth bass fishing is“ really good” for anglers using drop shot rigs and top water lures at Clear Lake, reported Dave Burruss of Clear Lake Outdoors.
“ Boaters are drop shotting with Robo Worms in Margarita Mutilator patterns in 6 to 12 feet of water,” said Burruss.“ They’ re also fishing top water lures, including frogs. The top water fishing is best in the lake’ s north end around tules, docks and weed mats.”
Anglers reported catching and releasing two 10 lb. largemouth over the past couple of weeks, but most of the fish are between 2 and 4 pounds.
“ I caught and released 35 bass in two days of fishing,” said Burruss.“ Most were 2 to 4 pounds, with the biggest going 4-1 / 2 pounds. I found my best action on the River2Sea Top Notch lures.”
Crappie have moved into deep water with the summer heat. He recommended fishing crappie jigs at 20 feet deep around drop offs for the best slabside success.
“ There are still a lot of bluegill hitting off the docks,” Burruss added.“ Use red worms, mealworms and pieces of nightcrawlers.”

Collins Lake
Trout, Catfish & Crappie Grace Stringers
OREGON HOUSE – Ed at Collins Lake Resort reported a number of good catches and overall still more trout than bass or crappie this summer.
However, he said,“ It’ s clear that the trout are not immune to the constant unabated heat of the last two weeks. It is possible to bring in a limit but even Don Feryance, who earlier this month limited eight days in a row is coming up with partial stringers.”
“ At the same time there’ s been an uptick in the number of catfish and crappie visiting the scales. At the top of the leaderboard, Eric Crow sent a picture of a 12.2 pound catfish his wife Renee reeled in. This monstrosity was drawn in by the scent of sardines right out in front of campsite # 412,” he noted.
“ Lucky Williams from Richmond pulled up a 5-3 / 4 pound cat on worms.

Joe from Vacaville didn’ t have chicken livers so he tossed out a hotdog-on-ahook from the shore near Elmer’ s cove and caught a 3 pounder for his efforts. As the runoff slows for the summer some catfish that had been hiding in coves and corners will migrate up the channel toward the inlet, where Tristan and Aaron Smith caught a pair, weighing in at 5 and almost 7 pounds,” said Ed.
“ I don’ t have a whole lot of pictures of crappie but I can tell you they are biting,” he noted.“ My bait of choice would be red worms, which I didn’ t have last Saturday evening when I took my kids and nephew and niece out for a sunset cruise on the patio boat. It was last minute and the Collins Lake store was out of redworms so I was stuck with whatever bait was left on the boat, PowerBait and salmon eggs.”
“ All evening long we just had nibbles while, I kid you not, 30 feet off our bow my buddy in another boat was pulling up a crappie on a redworm about every 3 minutes. He felt so sorry for us that he passed a pole our way,” he stated.
“ Of course, not everyone agrees with me, my fish photo log says Chris Holsey from Yuba City caught 25 crappie down by the dam on nightcrawlers,” he concluded.

RIO LINDA – Until the salmon season opens up on the Sacramento River on July 16, channel and white catfish will offer the best summertime action.
“ Catfish are now hitting on the Sacramento from Verona to Knights Landing,” said Eddie Bisbee at Elhorn Outdoors.“ The fish average 3 to 5 pounds. Of course, there are also
